QUINCY, Ill. – After holding a lead for much of the night, Missouri S&T's men's basketball team was unable to finish the job down the stretch Thursday night and fell 84-81 to Quincy in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest at Pepsi Arena.
As was the case a year ago, when the Hawks (7-12, 3-7 GLVC) overtook the Miners (2-16, 0-10 GLVC) in the final minute, Quincy again got the go-ahead points in the final 60 seconds on a free throw by Ryan Briscoe with 37 seconds remaining. The Miners turned the ball over on their next possession after Briscoe missed the second of two free throws, allowing Marcus Hinton to extend the lead with two free throws with 14 seconds on the clock.
The Miners tried to score quickly afterwards, but Hinton blocked a shot by
Dulan Scott (Chicago, IL/Farragut Academy), allowing the Hawks to practically ice the game at the line. Briscoe made one-of-two at the line with four seconds to go to make it a four-point game, but Scott was fouled in the backcourt and sent to the free throw line.
After making the first free throw, Scott missed the second on purpose to give the Miners a chance to get the ball back for a potential game-tying three-pointer, but the Hawks got the rebound and ran out the clock.
Quincy took an initial 8-3 lead in the contest, but the Miners went on a 14-0 run to take a nine-point lead after Scott – who tied his career high with 24 points – drilled a three-pointer at the 13:30 mark. The Hawks cut the lead to eight before S&T used an 8-0 run to extend its lead to 16 on another Scott trey with 8:24 left in the half.
Another S&T run, this one of 13 straight points, gave the Miners their biggest lead of the half at 44-27 with under two minutes to go before halftime, but the Hawks scored 10 of the final 11 points of the half – capped by a half-court shot by Robby Dosier – to trim the margin to eight by the intermission.
The Miners were able to maintain the lead through a large portion of the second half, even as the Hawks got the difference down to one or two possessions on several occasions. S&T led 71-64 following a pair of
Romain Louiserre (La Ferte Alais, France/Fredrick Fays) free throws with 6:52 to go, but the Hawks scored seven straight points to draw even for the first time since the early minutes with just over five minutes to play.
With 3:14 to go, Tanner Stuckman made two free throws to put Quincy into the lead, but Louiserre tied it by making one-of-two at the line moments later. Hinton put the Hawks back in front with a lay-up with 2:37 remaining, but two free throws by Louiserre at the 1:23 mark tied the game back up at 80.
The Miners, who shot 44.6 percent from the field in the game, had five players in double figures. Besides Scott's 24 points, S&T got 18 from Louiserre and 10 apiece from
Allante Pickens (Chicago, IL/Curie),
Ervin Sarajlic (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) and
Sebastian Ferenc (Zgierz, Poland/).
Hinton led Quincy with 18 points as the Hawks shot 53.4 percent from the field in the contest.
The Miners will host Rockhurst Saturday on Military Appreciation Day at Billy Key Court. Game time is at 3 p.m.
