Rolla, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Miners opened the Middle of Everywhere Classic with a dominating 3-0 (25-11, 25-18, 25-16) of Christian Brothers University on Friday afternoon at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building. S&T (2-4) recorded 42 kills in the match against only seven errors and had an attack percentage of .354 in the match.
The two sides traded the first 10 points of the contest before the Miners began to pull away thanks to an 11-2 run. S&T had three blocks in the run while
Calla Meyer (Clackamas, Ore./Clackamas) and
Claire Friedlund (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South) added two kills apiece. The Miners led by as many as 15 points in the frame before the Buccaneers (3-2) got a couple of late points but
Payton Gannaway (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State) ended the set with a kill from
Sarah McGinnis (Middleton, Wis./Edgewood) to give S&T the set 25-11.
In the middle set, Christian Brothers took an early lead at 11-7 and forced the Miners to take a timeout. Out of the timeout S&T responded scoring nine of the next 10 points to retake the lead and wouldn't relinquish it. The Miners stretched their lead to seven points and would ended up winning by that margin. Friedlund paced the offense with five kills in the set while
Kyley Thompson (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) added two.
The Bucs grabbed an early lead in set three but it would be short lived as the Miners rattled off five of the next six points to gain the advantage. S&T used another long run midway through the set to pull away leading by as many as 10 points. CBU cut the deficit to eight points but wouldn't get any closer as
Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) ended the match with her 11
th kill of the contest.
Friedlund led the Miner attack with 15 kills and was joined in double figures by Schlader while Thompson finished with nine kills. McGinnis dished out 21 assists and had nine digs while
Eva Mich (St. Peters, Mo./Francis Howell Central) had a match high 17 digs.
S&T returns to action on Friday evening hosting Pittsburg State at 7 p.m. in its second match in the Middle of Everywhere Classic.
