ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T held two leads Tuesday night in its home contest against Northwood, but couldn't grab the advantage for a third time and settled for a 2-2 tie with the Timberwolves at the S&T Soccer Field.
Despite being outshot 10-5 in the opening half, the Miners came out of the first 45 minutes of play with the lead as
Austin Parks (Rolla, MO/Rolla) took a through ball from
Unnar Ulfarsson (Gardabaer, Iceland/Fjolnir Reykjavik) and scored from 15 yards away in front of the net in the 11
th minute.
Northwood tied the score in the 50
th minute when S&T goalkeeper
Aaron Hohenstein (St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South) made an initial save on a shot by James Vaughan, but Vaughan was able to get to his own rebound and he converted the opportunity to knot the game.
The Miners regained the lead with exactly 28 minutes remaining when
David Murphy (Naperville, IL/Naperville Central) headed in a free kick from Ulfarasson to give S&T a 2-1 advantage, but the Timberwolves (1-1-1) tied it up gain just 1:04 later when Brady Cole headed in a cross.
Both teams had good scoring chances over the final 27 minutes of regulation time and the 20 extra minutes, including a free kick that Vaughan hit off the crossbar in the 80
th minute and another by S&T's
Felipe Andrade (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/) in the final moments of overtime that went wide.
Hohenstein finished with 12 saves in goal for S&T, who was outshot by a 27-12 margin in the contest.
Missouri S&T (1-0-1) will open its Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule Friday when it hosts Indianapolis in a 7:30 p.m. game at the S&T Soccer Field.
