Miners fall to UIndy in GLVC men's soccer opener

ROLLA, Mo. – A quick flurry by Indianapolis early in the first half that netted the Greyhounds two goals was more than Missouri S&T could overcome Friday evening as it dropped its Great Lakes Valley Conference opener by a 3-1 score at the S&T Soccer Field.

The Greyhounds scored twice in a span of 10 seconds in the 13th minutes of action to take a 2-0 lead and held the advantage for the remainder of the night, even as the Miners attempted to make a run at tying the game in the second half.

David Kurz got the first goal as he got a corner kick redirected to him by James Jenkins to put the Greyhounds in front, then after play resumed, Jenkins was able to get possession of the ball and got a breakaway that led to a quick second tally, as he beat S&T goalkeeper Aaron Hohenstein (St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South).

The Miners cut that lead in half in the 28th minute when Unnar Ulfarsson (Gardabaer, Iceland/Fjolnir Reykjavik) scored on a direct free kick from about 30 yards away; the score would remain that way to the intermission.

S&T took the momentum from the goal and tried to get the equalizer, but only got one shot on frame – a head ball effort by David Murphy (Naperville, IL/Naperville Central) following a corner kick – before the Greyhounds (2-1, 1-0 GLVC) extended the lead when Adrian Lopez got to a rebound and scored in the 63rd minute.

UIndy outshot the Miners 22-8 in the contest, as Hohenstein finished with eight saves in goal.

The Miners (1-1-1, 0-1 GLVC) hit the road for the first time in the regular season Sunday when they face Bellarmine in a 2:30 p.m. (Eastern time) contest in Louisville, Ky.
