Daytona Beach, Fla. – Kyley Thompson (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) finished with a career-high 18 kills to lead the Missouri S&T Miners to its first victory of 2017 in a 3-1 (25-22, 32-30, 19-25, 25-19). S&T finished the match with 61 kills and also got a career-high 16 kills from
Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston).
The Miners (1-2) trailed by as many as five points in the opening set and still trailed 20-16 late but finished the set on a 9-2 run to complete the comeback.
Carson Talley (St. Louis, Mo./Affton) had three kills in that set deciding run with Thompson, Schlader and
Calla Meyer (Clackamas, Ore./Clackamas) adding one each.
The second set was an epic battle featuring 19 ties and 11 lead changes. S&T was down two set points before getting back-to-back kills from Thompson and Schlader to even the frame. The Bison (2-1) went back in front on a kill by Sophia Couto but couldn't close out the set as a service error evened it up. The Miners had three different opportunities to close out the set after kills by Thompson but OBU kept battling back. The Bison had two more set points but couldn't put S&T away. With the set tied at 30, Talley knocked down a kill to give the Miners their fourth set point of the stanza and Thompson ended it with her eighth kill of the set.
Oklahoma Baptist led for a majority of the third set leading by as many as six in the frame and would win by that margin. S&T struggled to get its offense going in the stanza hitting just .075 percent. Schlader had six kills in the set while Talley and
Carlie Combs (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) had two kills each.
S&T flipped the script on the Bison in the fourth set getting out to an early lead and used an 8-4 run midway through the frame to build a six point cushion. Oklahoma Baptist cut the deficit to three but the Miners slammed the door ending the match on a 5-2 run to seal the victory. Thompson finished with six kills in the decisive set while Schlader had four.
Thompson finished with a match high in kills and was joined in double figures by Schlader.
Sarah McGinnis (Middleton, Wis./Edgewood) recorded match highs in assists (33) and digs (24) while Schlader also added 18 digs. S&T finished the match outhitting Oklahoma Baptist .139-to-.136.
