ROLLA, Mo. – After battling through a scoreless duel for most of Saturday afternoon,
Will McIntyre (Queenstown, New Zealand/) and
Austin Parks (Rolla, MO/Rolla) combined to put a conclusion to Missouri S&T's opening men's soccer contest of the 2017 season as McIntyre's overtime goal gave the Miners a 1-0 win over Northeastern State.
With over six minutes gone in the first overtime period, Parks cut across the box and dropped off a back pass to a trailing McIntyre, who fired a shot past RiverHawk goalkeeper Ryan Davis to end the game and give S&T an opening game win for the first time since 2014.
The teams played on relatively even terms on the stat sheet – each team had seven corner kicks and 15 shots apiece through regulation time before S&T had the only two in overtime – but the Miners had a couple of good scoring chances in the second half.
Ian Hansen (Springfield, MO/Kickapoo) hit a shot through a crowd that hooked wide of the net in the 69
th minute and late in the half,
Tyler Sivadon (Spring, TX/Concordia Lutheran) just missed on a head ball attempt off a corner kick.
In the meantime, S&T goalkeeper
Aaron Hohenstein (St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South) kept the Miners tied as he turned away eight Northeastern (0-2) shots, including a diving stop on a shot to the far post by Aaron Ugbah in the 77
th minute.
The Miners prevailed despite playing the final 23 minutes of regulation time and overtime period a man down.
Missouri S&T will return to action Tuesday as it hosts Northwood at 5 p.m. at the S&T Soccer Field.
