Romeoville, Ill. — The Missouri S&T Lady Miners couldn't overcome an early goal in its 1-0 loss at Lewis on Friday evening in Romeoville, Ill. The Lady Miners (0-5, 0-3 GLVC) were outshot 6-0 in the first 45 minutes but had a 4-3 advantage in the second half.
The Flyers (2-3, 1-2 GLVC) scored the lone goal in the 14
th minute off a corner kick. Mackenzie Fuller sent the ball into the box where Payton Emond was able to get a shot off. The initial shot was stopped but Cali Havelka-Vanderplow was able to pounce on the rebound and score before the S&T defense could clear the ball.
Lewis had a couple of other opportunities early in the half but
Liz Carrano (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) made three saves to keep her team down just a goal at the break.
The Lady Miners had a couple of chances early in the second half from
Mary Rommer (Wells Bridge, N.Y./Unatego) but both her attempts went wide.
Kayla Foster (Sand Springs, Okla./Charles Page) tried to tie the game in the 69
th minute but her attempt was high.
The Flyers tried to add to their lead early in the second half but the S&T defense blocked a pair of shots. Lewis had a chance to put the game away in the 84
th minute but
Liz Carrano (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) stopped Fuller to keep it a one-goal margin.
Mikaela Mockenhaupt (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) had an attempt to level the score in the 85
th minute but her shot went high.
The Lady Miners conclude their four match road trip on Sunday heading to Springfield, Ill., to take on the Prairie Stars of Illinois Springfield beginning at 12 p.m.
