Miners rally to force overtime, but fall in extra period to Flyers

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Missouri S&T got a goal late in regulation time from David Murphy (Naperville, IL/Naperville Central) to extend its game Friday night at Lewis, but the host Flyers got the victory with a goal midway through the first overtime period by a count of 2-1.

After the Miners had missed a good chance with a pair of corner kicks, Nico Mueller took a long pass up the field and after getting free from an S&T defender, hit a shot from a tough angle past Miner goalkeeper Aaron Hohenstein (St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South) and just inside the far post to end the game.

The goal allowed the Flyers (3-2, 2-1 GLVC) to end the Miners' 14-game unbeaten streak in overtime games in the process, as Missouri S&T fell to 1-3-1 overall and 0-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

The Flyers struck first in the 10th minute of play as Konrad Malinowski had a ball headed back to him on a break from Mueller and drilled a shot from 25 yards away into the top right corner.

S&T had its first good scoring chance in the 25th minute, when Ian Hansen (Springfield, MO/Kickapoo) had a shot turned away on a diving stop by Flyer goalkeeper Philip Huang, then after getting a corner kick following the save, had the ball in the box but couldn't get a shot on net.

About four minutes later, Unnar Ulfarsson (Gardabaer, Iceland/Fjolnir Reykjavik) fired a shot from outside the box that went just high over the net.

Hohenstein made a diving stop on his own on a point blank shot by Juan Elizalde in the 61st minute to keep the margin at one, then came out of the goal to prevent another Flyer scoring chance moments later.

In the 68th minute, the Miners had a pair of great opportunities to tie the game, as Felipe Andrade (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/) had a shot turned away by Huang, then Ian Hansen (Springfield, MO/Kickapoo) headed a ball just over the net following a corner kick.  Andrade had another shot attempt blocked by the Lewis defense about two minutes later.

Hohenstein made another key stop in the 83rd minute, extending his right leg out to stop a shot by Mueller from right in front of the net.   Four minutes later, Murphy got a cross in front from Andrade and put a shot by Huang to even the score at one.

Andrade nearly put the Miners in front with under two minutes to go as he hit a shot just wide and Hansen was stopped shortly afterwards, then Hohenstein had to make a stop with seconds remaining on another opportunity by Mueller to send the game into overtime.

The Miners held a 17-15 advantage in shots on the night, including an 11-4 advantage in the second half.  Hohenstein finished with five saves in the contest.

Missouri S&T will remain on the road for a Sunday match at Illinois Springfield Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
