Miners rally in second half to top Prairie Stars

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Missouri S&T scored a goal late in regulation time for the second game in succession Sunday afternoon and this time, the goal earned the Miners a victory.

Unnar Ulfarsson (Gardabaer, Iceland/Fjolnir Reykjavik) scored with under five minutes remaining in the second half to break a tie and send the Miners to a 2-1 win over Illinois Springfield, giving S&T's its first victory in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

Ian Hansen (Springfield, MO/Kickapoo) set up the game-winner, getting to a loose ball just inside of midfield and cutting through the UIS defense all the way to the end line, where he sent a cross in front to Ulfarsson as he was parked in front of the net for a redirect.

Following a scoreless first half where the Prairie Stars (3-3, 2-2 GLVC) outshot S&T 6-4, it was UIS that got on the scoreboard first when Alex Morais hit a long shot past Miner goalkeeper Aaron Hohenstein (St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South) in the 53rd minute.

The Miners answered back about seven minutes later as Felipe Andrade (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/) – who had been held without a goal over the first five games of the season – tallied his first of the season after a nice passing combination between Martin Klevjer (Trondheim, Norway/) and Ulfarsson that ended with Andrade redirecting the latter pass into the net.

The goal was the 20th in Andrade's Miner career, tying him for ninth place on S&T's all-time list.

S&T had a good opportunity to move in front in the 75th minute with a couple of head ball attempts that just missed the mark, then the Miners finally broke the tie on the Ulfarsson goal.

The Miners held a 21-17 advantage in shots after the second half became more wide open – the teams combined for 28 shots over the final 45 minutes – with Hohenstein finishing with nine saves.

The Miners (2-3-1, 1-3 GLVC) return home for their next two games, beginning with Friday's 7:30 p.m. contest against Quincy at the S&T Soccer Field.
