Kansas City, Mo. -- Missouri S&T's softball team dropped both ends of its doubleheader at Rockhurst 2-0 and 6-1 on Sunday afternoon at Loyola Park in Kansas City. S&T's (15-22, 7-9 GLVC) offense was held in check by Rockhurst's (24-16, 13-3 GLVC) pitching staff getting only eight hits in the doubleheader.
Game 1 – Rockhurst 2, Lady Miners 0
The Hawks broke a scoreless tie in the third inning taking advantage off back-to-back errors and walk to load the bases with no one out.
Avery English (Carterville, Ill./Carterville) got Hannah Pyle to ground into a force out at the plate for the first out of the inning. Lexie Zuniga followed with a single to right center scoring Megan Freitag and Madison Wagner for the only runs of the game.
The Lady Miners had opportunities in the fourth and seventh innings but were unable to bring them in.
S&T was held to four hits in the opener and was led by
Monica Weiss (St. Louis, Mo./Marquette ),
Ashley Rausch (Washington, Iowa/Washington),
Jacey Allen (Roanoke, Texas/Byron Nelson) and
Lori Badalamenti (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland ) had a hit each. English suffered the loss allowing two runs, no earned, on four hits with a walk and a strikeout.
Game 2 – Rockhurst 6, Lady Miners 1
The Lady Miners struck first with a run in the third inning. They loaded the bases with an error and back-to-back singles with one out.
Carley Hamann (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way North) was robbed of a single on a great by Kelsey Tepen. Tepen tried to get an out at second but everyone was safe. S&T missed an opportunity for more as
Savannah Fedorchak (Oakville, Mo./Oakville) and
Kelly Heckemeyer (St. Elizabeth, Mo./St. Elizabeth) each grounded out to end the inning.
It remained that way until the sixth inning. Rockhurst got back-to-back singles from Hannah Pyle and Zuniga to start the inning. Hannah Stam advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt and Lauren Marks dropped a single into right allowing Payton Staggs to score the tying run. A throwing error allowed the other runners to advance to second and third. Gabbie Boerema, hitting for Danielle Cross, doubled to left center to give the Hawks the lead.
Lauren Cairo followed with a single to center scoring Boerema. Freitag followed with another single and then Halle Koelliker, hitting for Wagner, lined a double into right center to make it 6-1. Rockhurst sent 10 batters to the plate in the sixth.
The Lady Miner offense was once again held to four hits with
Abby Klein (Kansas City, MO/Staley) registering two of them. Weiss and Rausch had a hit each.
Kati Viets (Sweet Springs, Mo./Sweet Springs) suffered the loss allowing six runs on 11 hits with a pair of strikeouts and a walk.
S&T is back at home on Wednesday hosting Drury in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
