Young’s big day gives S&T split at Wisconsin-Parkside

Somers, Wis. – Olivia Young (Milstadt, Ill./Belleville Township) went 3-4 with a pair of doubles and hit the go-ahead home run with two outs in the seventh inning to give Missouri S&T a 4-3 win in the opener of its doubleheader at Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday. The Rangers fought back to take the second game 3-2.

Game 1 Lady Miners 4, Wisconsin-Parkside 3
Parkside (18-29, 12-15 GLVC) jumped on top with a run in the first inning. Jessica Shields led off with a single, went to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch.

The Lady Miners scored twice in the third to take their first lead of the contest. Ashley Rausch (Washington, Iowa/Washington) led off the inning with a solo home run to left center. With two outs, Abby Klein (Kansas City, MO/Staley) reached on an error by the shortstop, stole second and scored on Olivia Young (Milstadt, Ill./Belleville Township)'s double to right center.

The Rangers answered back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. They loaded the bases with two outs and tied the game on an infield single back to Avery English (Carterville, Ill./Carterville) and retook the lead on a walk to Madison Manders scoring Kellie Fenza.

S&T tied the game in the top of the fifth. With one out, Monica Weiss (St. Louis, Mo./Marquette ) walked and stole second. Klein lined out to short for the second out but Young came through hitting a 2-2 pitch into right center for her second double of the contest scoring Weiss.
The Lady Miners missed an opportunity to retake the lead the sixth getting their first two on but couldn't push across the run. In the seventh, Weiss led off with a single but was caught stealing and then Klein grounded out to first. Young delivered hitting a 2-2 pitch over the fence in center for her second home run in as many days to put S&T back in front 4-3.

Parkside got a two out infield single in the bottom of the seventh but English got Fenza to groundout to her ending the game.

The Lady Miners outhit the Rangers 7-5 with Young registering three hits. Weiss, Rausch Carley Hamann (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way North) and Hannah Franceschini (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) had a hit each. English improved to 11-15 allowing three runs on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts in the complete game effort.

Game 2 – Wisconsin-Parkside 3, Lady Miners 2
S&T jumped on top in the opening frame of game two scoring a run on three hits. Hamann drove in Klein with a single to left center. Franceschini followed with a single to center but Savannah Fedorchak (Oakville, Mo./Oakville) was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.

The Rangers tied the game in the bottom of the second on a two out home run from Cassie Walek. Parkside then took the lead in the home half of the fifth. Kati Viets (Sweet Springs, Mo./Sweet Springs) retired the first two hitters in the frame before hitting Sara Markelonis. Allison Hausl followed with a double to left putting runners at second and third. Shields followed with a two-run double.

The Lady Miners got a run back in the sixth. Fedorchak led off the inning with a single and was run for by Courtney Jackson (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South). Hamann moved Jackson to second with a sacrifice and then with two outs Rausch singled down the left field line to score Jackson but was thrown at second to end the inning.

S&T finished the game outhitting the Rangers 7-4. Franceschini led the way with two hits while Weiss, Klein, Fedorchak, Hamann and Rausch had one apiece. Viets suffered the loss allowing three runs on four hits with three strikeouts and a pair of walks.

The Lady Miners finish their season with a record of 22-31, 14-16 GLVC. The 22 wins are the most in a season for the program since the 2010 went 27-23.
