Long balls sink S&T in sweep at Missouri-St. Louis

St. Louis, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners were swept in its doubleheader at Missouri-St. Louis 2-1 and 13-1 in five innings on Friday. UMSL hit a pair of solo shots to account for its runs in the first game and got a two-run shot in the nightcap.

Game 1 – Missouri-St. Louis 2, Lady Miners 1
The opening game was pitcher's duel between Avery English (Carterville, Ill./Carterville) and Carley Kingery. Kingery set down the first 13 hitters she faced before Ashely Rausch reached on a passed ball on a strikeout in the fifth inning. English held the Tritons (30-12, 12-6 GLVC) to three hits in the first five innings but allowed a lead-off home run to Alex Stupek in the second for the first run of the game.

S&T (17-24, 9-11 GLVC) tied the game in the fifth inning without a hit. Rausch started the rally and was then run for by English. Kelly Heckemeyer (St. Elizabeth, Mo./St. Elizabeth) reached on a throwing error by Serena Olson on a sacrifice bunt which allowed English to advance all the way to third. Hannah Franceschini (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) drove in the tying run with a fielder's choice to short as Stupek threw to the plate to try and get English but the tag was late.

Sara Kern put UMSL back in front in the home half of the sixth with a solo shot to left field with two outs.

The Lady Miners were held hitless by Kingery as she faced 23 batters in the contest, two over the minimum, and struck out 11 batters while allowing an unearned run. English held the Tritons to two runs on six hits with two strikeouts and two walks in the complete game effort.

Game 2 – Missouri-St. Louis 13, Lady Miners 1 Five Innings
The Tritons sent nine batters to the plate in the first inning scoring six runs on five hits. Kern had a two-run double in the inning and Ryan Logan capped off the inning with a two-run homer to right field.

S&T got a run back in the second on back-to-back doubles from Carley Hamann (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way North) and Olivia Young (Milstadt, Ill./Belleville Township) with two outs in the inning.

UMSL added another run in the second getting a lead-off double from Reagan Osborne and a single from Morgan Hill to regain its six run lead.

The Tritons extended their lead in the third scoring four runs on four hits and an error. Olson delivered the big blow in the inning hitting a two-run double to right center. UMSL scored its final two runs on three hits and an error in the fourth.

S&T was held to just the two hits in game two. Kati Viets (Sweet Springs, Mo./Sweet Springs) suffered the defeat allowing 11 runs, 10 earned on 12 hits in 2.2 innings pitched.

The Lady Miners are back in action on Saturday when it takes on Maryville in a GLVC doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
