Rosemont, Ill. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners bats came alive in its 10-0 win over Walsh in five innings on Saturday afternoon at The Dome at the Ballpark in Rosemont, Ill. The Lady Miners (5-7) pounded out a season-high 14 hits and the first four batters in the lineup combined to go 11-for-12 with nine runs scored, six runs batted in and three stolen bases.
S&T jumped on top quickly getting three straight hits to begin the contest.
Abby Klein (Kansas City, MO/Staley) led off with a ground-rule double down the left field line and went to third on
Monica Weiss (St. Louis, Mo./Marquette )'s bunt single. Weiss would later steal second.
Kelly Heckemeyer (St. Elizabeth, Mo./St. Elizabeth) followed with a single up the middle to score both runners.
The Lady Miners had a chance for another run later in the inning but
Hannah Franceschini (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) was cut down at the plate trying to score on
Avery English (Carterville, Ill./Carterville)'s single to center.
Walsh (0-3) got a lead-off double in the home half of the first but
Kati Viets (Sweet Springs, Mo./Sweet Springs) got the next three hitters to keep them off the board. The Cavaliers had their first two hitters reach in the bottom of the second but Viets again kept them off the board by retiring the next three hitters.
S&T broke the game open in the third. Klein led off with a single and then stole second. Weiss followed with a walk and then Heckemeyer drove in Klein with a single back up the middle. With runners on the corner, Fedorchak walked to load the bases with no outs. Walsh made a pitching change bringing in Shelbi Gregg to replace Ryan Kuula. Franceschini drove in a run with a fielder's choice and English drove one in with a sacrifice fly to right.
In the fourth inning the Lady Miners had their first two hitters retired but still sent nine batters to the plate scoring four runs on five hits. Heckemeyer followed with a single up the middle to load the bases. Fedorchak followed with a single through the right side to bring in Klein and Weiss and send Heckemeyer to third.
Courtney Jackson (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South) came into run for Fedorchak and stole second. Franceschini followed with a double to left to plate two more.
S&T added another tally in the fifth inning again coming with two outs. Klein singled, went to second a single by Weiss and scored on Heckemeyer's single up the middle to cap the scoring.
Klein and Heckemeyer paced the Lady Miner attack getting four hits apiece while Weiss and English added two hits each. Fedorchak and Franceschini accounted for the other two hits.
Viets picked up the complete game shutout allowing just two hits in the contest with six strikeouts against two walks to improve to 3-3.
