Rolla, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miner softball nine rallied for a 4-3 win over Columbia College in its second game of the day on Sunday at Maryville University. The Lady Miners (4-5) dropped the opener to Maryville 3-1 at Weber Field.
Game 2 – Lady Miners 4 Columbia College 3
S&T fell behind early allowing two unearned runs in the top of the first inning against the Cougars (5-2). With one out Theresa DeCosty reached on an error, stole second and scored on Allyson Metz's double down the right field line with two outs. Metz advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Karli Leeper's double down the right field line.
The Lady Miners got those two runs in the back in the bottom half of the inning.
Monica Weiss (St. Louis, Mo./Marquette ) led off the game with a single down the right field line and then stole second. After a groundout, she advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Jacey Allen (Roanoke, Texas/Byron Nelson) walked on four pitches to put runners on the corner for
Savannah Fedorchak (Oakville, Mo./Oakville). Fedorchak hit one to deep left for a double to score Weiss and put runners at second and third. After a strikeout,
Carley Hamann (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way North) beat out an infield single to second to score Allen and tie the game.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the fifth. After the first two were retired, Allen battled through a seven pitch at-bat to earn a walk. Fedorchak followed with a single to left and a misplay by the left fielder allowed the ball to all the way to the fence allowing Allen to score from first.
Hannah Franceschini (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) followed with an RBI single to center to score
Hannah Smith (Oconomowoc, Wis./Catholic Memorial), running for Fedorchak, to make it 4-2.
Columbia cut the lead to one in the seventh. With one out, Natalie Dummitt reached on an error and advanced to second on a single by Rachel Sullivan. Carly Spalding followed with a single to center and Dummitt tried to score on the play but was gunned down at the plate on a perfect throw from Weiss to
Lauren King (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt North). The Cougars had the tying runs in scoring position for DeCosty who drove in a run with a single to third and moved the tying run to just 60 feet away.
Avery English (Carterville, Ill./Carterville) got out of the jam getting Molly Carter to fly out to
Olivia Young (Milstadt, Ill./Belleville Township) to end the game.
Fedorchak led S&T with two hits in the contest while Weiss, Franceschini, Hamann,
Ashley Rausch (Washington, Iowa/Washington),
Olivia Young (Milstadt, Ill./Belleville Township) and English had a hit each. English improved to 2-2 on the season allowing three runs, no earned, on eight hits with five strikeouts and no walks.

In the opener on Sunday, the Saints (4-4) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the first inning. Samantha Hausl got the scoring started with a ground-rule double down the left field line scoring Courtney Ferguson and advanced Nikki Taylor to third. With two outs in the inning and the bases loaded Ashley Marks drew a walk to score Taylor.
Maryville added to its lead in the home half of the third. Taylor led off the inning with a single through the left side of the infield and was run for by Heather Wernle. Hausl followed with another ground-rule double, this time to right center, to put runners at second and third with no one out. Emily Frankenreiter followed with a single to short but Hausl was hit by the ball and was called out for interference leaving runners on the corner. Bri Livingston followed with a sacrifice fly to left to score Wernle. Marks followed with a single to put two on with two out but a strike out ended the inning.
The Lady Miners got a run back in the sixth inning on solo home run to left center off the bat of Fedorchak. She nearly went back-to-back with
Kelly Heckemeyer (St. Elizabeth, Mo./St. Elizabeth) but Heckemeyer was robbed of at least a double on a great running catch by Kasey Martin in right center.
S&T would bring the tying run to the plate in the seventh inning but were unable to get the runs across.
The Lady Miners were outhit in the opener 8-6. Fedorchak and
Abby Klein (Kansas City, MO/Staley) paced the offense with two hits each.
Kati Viets (Sweet Springs, Mo./Sweet Springs) fell to 2-2 allowing three runs on eight hits with a pair of strikeouts against three walks in six innings of work.
S&T returns to action this coming Friday traveling to Rosemont, Ill., to take part in the Lewis Flyer Dome Invite. The Lady Miners will take on the defending Midwest Regional champs in Grand Valley State at 3:30 p.m. and then will take on Wayne State later that evening at 8 p.m.
