Lady Miners head to St. Louis for pair of road games

Rolla, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners hit the road for the final time in the regular with a pair of trips to St. Louis this weekend. S&T (10-13, 5-10 GLVC) will take on Missouri-St. Louis (13-10, 8-7 GLVC) on Thursday evening at 5:30 p.m. and then will square off against Maryville (11-11, 7-8 GLVC) at 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Miners continue battle for one of the final spots for the upcoming GLVC Tournaments. They currently sit in 13th place in the standings but are a game behind Saint Joseph's and Wisconsin-Parkside who are tied for the last two spots. The Rangers and Pumas will play each other on Thursday evening in Rensselaer, Ind.

S&T looks to avenge its 68-65 loss to the Tritons back in December when the two sides meet on Thursday. The Lady Miners held a 17-point lead with 4:08 left in the third quarter and were up 14 after three but UMSL used an 18-1 run over the first seven minutes of the final quarter to grab a 59-56 lead after a layup by Sammie Sproul. S&T tied the game on the next possession on a three-pointer by Katey Brown (Craig, Neb./Guardian Angels Central Catholic).

The Tritons regained the lead on the ensuing possession on a three-pointer by Shelby Dahl. They continued to hold that lead in the final minute hitting six of at the foul line and were up 68-65 with 0:05 left. Aricca Daye (Des Moines, Iowa/Des Moines East) drove the length of the floor but missed a three at the buzzer to force the extra period.

Jamy Douvier (Sedgwick, Kan./Sunrise Christian Academy) led the Lady Miners in that game with 10 points while Kim Runge (Freedom, Wis./Freedom) grabbed 10 rebounds.

Janie Arand (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) continues to lead S&T in scoring with 10.5 points per game while Elsie Greenwood (Breckenridge, Mo./Penney High School) is averaging 9.5 per contest and Raetchel Gray (Allen, Okla./Byng ) is contributing 8.4 per game. Brown is the team's leading rebounder hauling in 5.4 per game. Gray and Daye are tied for the team lead in assists with 61.

UMSL enters Thursday's contest having won four straight and six of their last eight. Last weekend the Tritons picked up a pair of home wins against nationally ranked foes in Southern Indiana 65-59 and Bellarmine 58-57. They're currently tied for third in the GLVC West with William Jewell and are in a position to host one of the first round games in the conference tournament.

UMSL is led in scoring by Laura Szorenyi with 15 points per game. She is joined in double figures by isJordan Fletcher at 13.7 per contest while Robneisha Lee is dropping 10.0 per outing. Shawnta Johnson leads the club in rebounding with 7.1 per game and Fletcher is averaging 6.3 rebounds per contest. Lee leads the team with 49 assists while Fletcher has blocked 27 shots.

On Saturday, the Lady Miners travel back to St. Louis for a game against the Saints. S&T won the first matchup between the two 54-47 back on December 1 in Rolla. Elsie Greenwood (Breckenridge, Mo./Penney High School) led the Lady Miners with 11 points in that contest while Douvier and Brown grabbed 11 and 10 rebounds respectively.

Maryville had its five game winning streak snapped last Thursday with a 74-61 loss to Bellarmine at home and then lost to Southern Indiana 74-50 on Saturday afternoon. The Saints enter Thursday's contest against Drury tied with Truman State for the fifth in the GLVC West Division and are a game out of potentially hosting a first round GLVC Tournament game.

Maryville is second in the conference in three-point shooting making nearly 36 percent of its attempts and are tied for third in three-point field goals made per game with 7.0. Stephanie Sherwood leads the team in scoring with 12.5 per game and she is joined in double figures by Mary Barton and Ali Ringering at 10.9 per contest each. Alex Wolf leads the club in rebounding pulling down 7.7 per game and Ringering leads the team in assists with 52.
