ROLLA, Mo. -- Missouri S&T will look to complete its best season since 2012 Saturday afternoon as it hosts Quincy in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest on Military Appreciation Day at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
As part of Military Appreciation Day, all military personnel – active or retired – will be admitted free along with their immediate family members with a military I.D. card. In addition, with Saturday's contest being the final home game of the 2017 season for the Miners, the senior members of the S&T roster will also be honored prior to kickoff at 1 p.m.
While missing out on a chance last week to possibly gain a share of the GLVC title, the Miners enter Saturday's game at 6-4 on the year and will look to finish a year with at least seven victories for the first time since their 10-1 campaign five years ago. They will go up against a 3-7 Quincy team looking to end a tough year on a high note, as the Hawks have dropped their last five games entering play this weekend.
ABOUT THE MINERS: Missouri S&T missed a chance to draw even with fifth-ranked Indianapolis in the loss column in the GLVC standings last week, as UIndy rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit to beat the Miners 43-34 and clinch the outright conference title.
Therefore, the Miners come into Saturday's game with a shot at finishing second in the standings and will look to do so behind a pair of record-setting performers and others looking to also reach historical marks on the final day of the season.
Quarterback
Tyler Swart (Dickinson, TX/Dickinson) broke the S&T career passing record last week with 5,689 yards and is closing in on becoming the third Miner in history to throw for 3,000 yards in a season. Swart has completed 63.3 percent of his passes for 2,996 yards -- fourth-most in NCAA Division II -- and 22 touchdowns.Â
Logan Armontrout (Centralia, MO/Centralia) has caught six of those scoring passes, while Justin Vaughn, who had two touchdown catches last week, has a team-high 37 receptions.
Meanwhile,
Deshawn Jones (Olympia Fields, IL/Rich Central) broke the S&T single season record for rushing yards last week as he enters the season finale with 1,388 on the year, also the fourth-most in Division II. Jones has cleared the 100-yard mark in a school record eight straight contests.
A third record holder, placekicker
Ben Styron (Harrisonville, MO/Harrisonville), broke the single season record for points by a kicker last week and enters the Quincy contest with 77 points on the year. He is also the co-holder of the school's one-year mark for field goals made with 13 heading into the season finale.
The Miner defense enters Saturday's game with the top-ranked unit in the GLVC as it has allowed just 296 yards per game.Â
Austin Truvillion (Kansas City, MO/Park Hill) leads S&T with 79 tackles on the year, while
Landon Compton (Lamar, MO/Lamar) has been in on 71 stops and along with
Tershawn Wharton (University City, MO/University City), ranks among the league leaders in tackles behind the line of scrimmage. Â
Â
Compton has made a league-best 15.5 for a loss, while
Tershawn Wharton (University City, MO/University City) leads the league with 18 tackles for a loss and leads the conference with 10.5 quarterback sacks. Meanwhile, Roderick Chapman and
Ryan Kirkendall (Silsbee, TX/Silsbee) are second and third, respectively, in the GLVC in passes defended.
ABOUT QUINCY:Â The Hawks come into Saturday's game looking to snap a five-game losing streak and have scored only 28 points during that stretch, half of which came in last week's 42-14 loss at McKendree.
Quincy has had success running the football this year -- it ranks fifth in the GLVC with an average of 137.7 yards per game -- led by tailback Chris Harris with 544 yards on the season and six touchdowns.  Quarterback Andrew Rund has 282 yards on the ground and has also thrown for 1,171 yards and five scores.
Rund has completed 55.3 percent of his passes, with Kody Wood leading the receiving corps with 29 catches for 460 yards and three touchdowns. Tight end Owen Schoenenberger has 22 receptions on the year and Brendan Saak has caught 15 balls.
The Quincy defense has been paced by linebacker Cody Leonard with 101 tackles on the year, the third-most by a player in the conference. Leonard also leads the Hawks in tackles for a loss with 13.5 on the year, one more than defensive end T.J. Daniels.
Nate Ruckermann has been in on 64 stops and Daniels has made 58 tackles on the season. Adehkeem Brown, a first-team All-GLVC selection in the secondary in 2016, leads the Hawks with three interceptions.
