Miners fall to Bulldogs in four sets

Kirksville, Mo. – Missouri S&T's volleyball team dropped a four set match to Truman State on Friday evening at Pershing Arena in Kirksville, Mo. Carlie Combs (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) led S&T with 14 kills while Calla Meyer (Clackamas, Ore./Clackamas) finished with nine and Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) added eight.

The Miners trailed 14-11 in the opening set but went on a 7-2 run to take an 18-16 advantage on a kill from Schlader. The Bulldogs (17-13, 9-8 GLVC) came back to tie the set at 18 on a block from Holly Hildebrand and Savvy Hughes but S&T got the lead right back after a service error. Truman then proceeded to score the next three points to retake the lead and forced the Miners to take a timeout. S&T got back to within 21-20 on a kill from Claire Friedlund (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South) but the Bulldogs scored three of the next four points to extend their lead to 24-21. The Miners fought back to within 24-23 getting a kill from Meyer and an ace from Friedlund but were unable to finish the comeback as Truman took the opener 25-23.

The second set was a back-and-forth affair and was tied at 15 but S&T pulled away over the last 14 points outscoring the Bulldogs 10-4 to win 25-19 and even the match at a set apiece. Combs, Schlader and Meyer had three kills each in the frame while Friedlund and Payton Gannaway (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State) had two each.

The Miners led by four points early in set four but Truman used a 6-0 run to regain the lead. S&T trailed 17-16 late in the stanza and had a chance to tie the set but the Bulldogs closed out the frame outscoring the Miners 8-4 to win 25-20.

S&T fell behind 4-0 to start set four and was unable to get closer than two points the rest of the way. Truman used a 10-1 run to extend its two point lead to 11 after a kill by Savvy Hughes. The Miners cut the deficit to 20-12 but the Bulldogs closed it out scoring five of the final eight points to win 25-15.

S&T finished the match with a .137 hitting percentage recording 46 kills against 24 errors in 161 chances. Alexis White (Auburn, Wash./Riverside) handed out 28 assists while Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) had a career-high 24 digs.

The Bulldogs registered 55 kills against 22 errors in 170 chances to finish the match with an attack percentage of .194. Jasmine Brown and Natalie Brimeyer led Truman with 12 kills each while Holly Hildebrand added 10 kills. Hughes dished out 46 assists while Lauren Wacker finished with 21 digs.

The Miners (9-21, 2-15 GLVC) conclude their 2017 season on Saturday traveling to Liberty, Mo., to take on William Jewell at 3 p.m.
