#20 Miners capture home opener over #6 Delta State

ROLLA, Mo. -- Missouri S&T won six of the 11 events Friday evening and won a dual meet between two teams ranked in the College Swimming Coaches Association's pre-season top 25, as the 20th-ranked Miners were victorious by a count of 119-86 over sixth-ranked Delta State at the S&T Pool.

S&T got two individual wins from Tim Samuelsen (Stavanger, Norway/St. Svithun VGS) as he captured the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:37.88 and later the 500-freestyle in 4:41.12.  Morgan Meyer (Ruston, LA/Ruston) won the 50-yard freestyle in 21.54 seconds and the Miners also got event vicgtories from Eirik Nielsen (Stathelle, Norway/Toppidrettsgynmaset) in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:52.78, Ethan Shih (Papillion, NE/Papillion-LaVista) in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:53.16,

The Miners capped the night by winning the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:07.19 behind the quartet of Nielsen, Kevin  McPherson, Aaron Taske (Fairfield, OH/Saint Xavier) and Meyer.

Taske had second place showings in the 1,000-freestyle in 9:44.77 and in the 200-butterfly in 1:54.52, as was McPherson in the 200-freestyle in 1:43.96, Meyer in the 100-freestyle in 46.53 seconds, Jared Dachroeden (St. Louis, MO/Parkway North) in the 200-backstroke in 1:55.10 and Joshua Umrysh (Kingwood, TX/Kingwood) in the 200-breaststroke in 2:10.08

The Miners' team of Stuart Mossop (Houston, TX/James E. Taylor), Umrysh, Shih and Nielsen finished second in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:27.27.

S&T got a third place finish from both of its second relay teams, as the 400-medley group of Dylan Friesz (Round Rock, TX/Hutto), Alex Chavez, Colten Becker (Overland Park, KS/Blue Valley Northwest) and Dachroeden finished in 3:34.69 and the 400-freestyle team of John-Martin Schmidt (Topeka, KS/Hayden), Chris Betts (Katy, TX/Cinco Ranch), Shih and Dachroeden finished in 3:09.83.

Other third place showings Friday came from John-Martin Schmidt (Topeka, KS/Hayden) in the 200-freestyle in 1:45.87, Chris Betts (Katy, TX/Cinco Ranch) in the 50-freestyle in 21.63 seconds, Mossop in the 200-IM in 1:57.82, Becker in the 100-freestyle in 48.04 seconds, Friesz in the 200-backstroke in 1:58.53 and Alex Chavez in the 200-breaststroke in 2:10.50.

Missouri S&T will wrap up its weekend competition Saturday when it – along with Delta State -- takes part in the Lindenwood Quad against the host school and William Jewell in St. Peters, Mo.  Saturday's meet begins at 1 p.m.
