Aurora, Ill. – For the first time since the Midwest Region Crossover began back in 2008 the Missouri S&T Miners finished with a perfect 3-0 record after sweeping the Davis & Elkins Senators on Saturday afternoon at the Great Lakes Center in Aurora, Ill.
Carlie Combs (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) led four Miners (8-14) in double figures with 12 kills.
The opening set was even at 10 when S&T went on a 9-3 run to start to pull away. They got a pair of kills from
Payton Gannaway (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State) along with kills from Combs,
Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) and
Alexis White (Auburn, Wash./Riverside). The Senators (7-14) cut the deficit to five but were unable to get any closer as the Miners closed out the frame 25-19.
S&T fell behind 11-6 in the second set but after a timeout they regrouped and went on a 9-1 run to regain the lead and wouldn't relinquish it as they went onto win 25-18. The Miners hit .455 percent in the frame and were led by Schlader with five kills while Combs, Gannaway and
Claire Friedlund (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South) added four each.
S&T lead throughout the last set building an early seven point cushion. D&E cut into the deficit a couple of times but each time the Miners answered with a string of points eventually building a 12 point lead and would end up winning 25-12. S&T was even better offensively in the finale with an attack percentage of .469.
Combs finished with a match-high in kills and was joined in double figures by Friedlund with 11 while Schlader and Gannaway contributed 10 kills each.
Sarah McGinnis (Middleton, Wis./Edgewood) handed out 25 assists and
Corinne Stulce (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne) added 20 digs.
Anna Gallup led the Senators with 10 kills, Zoe Craig dished out 19 assists and Kelly Smith finished with 10 digs. The Miners held D&E to a hitting percentage of .167 for the match.
S&T is back in action next Friday when it travels to St. Louis for a GLVC match against Missouri-St. Louis beginning at 7 p.m.
