S&T drops match at Rockhurst

Kansas City, Mo. – Missouri S&T's women's soccer team dropped a 4-1 decision to Rockhurst at Bourke Field in Kansas City, Mo., on Sunday afternoon.

The Hawks (6-4, 4-3 GLVC) opened the scoring in the sixth minute. Lauren Merlo scored on a shot from yards out that went across the goal mouth and snuck inside the left post for her first of the season. Merlo added her second goal in the 19th minute when Rylee Hanes (Ladera Ranch, Calif./San Juan Hills) couldn't hang onto the shot and it snuck through her legs.

Cate Sommerhoff added to the Rockhurst lead heading in a goal in the 33rd minute of a cross from the left side. Kaley Nieters added the final tally on a penalty kick in the 57th minute.

Carli Tastad (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West) tried to score off a header attempt in the 64th minute but her shot went wide to the right. Mikaela Mockenhaupt (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) had another opportunity a couple of minutes later but missed wide. Madison Morris (Tulsa, Okla./Edison) nearly scored on a header attempt in the 68th minute that was saved by the keeper.

The Lady Miners got on the board in the 78th minute on Chayse Richardson (Collinsville, IL/Collinsville)'s first goal of the season. Taylor Vollmer (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West) threw the ball in and Julia Crets (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North) played the ball across the top of the box to Richardson who chipped it in over the keeper's head from 18 yards out.

S&T had another chance in the 81st minute that Morris hit over the goal and then Tastad missed a shot wide in the 81st minute. Mockenhaupt had another opportunity in the 83rd minute that was saved.

The Hawks finished the game outshooting the Lady Miners 14-12 and 8-4 in shots on goal. Tastad led S&T with three shots while Mockenhaupt, Morris, Richardson and Riley Cronin (Albuquerque, N. M./Sandia Prep) had two shots apiece.

The Lady Miners (0-10, 0-8 GLVC) return home to begin a three-match homestand on Friday when they take on Drury at 5 p.m.
