Slow start sinks Lady Miners in 78-64 loss to Rangers

Rolla, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners hit three of its first five shots from the floor to begin the game but went cold over the final 6:30 of the opening quarter and trailed by 13 points at the end of the frame in its 78-64 loss to Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday. S&T (6-7, 1-4 GLVC) was led in scoring by Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) with 12 points while Janie Arand (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) dropped in 10.

The Lady Miners trailed by just two after Elsie Greenwood (Breckenridge, Mo./Penney High School) hit a jumper from the left wing off a feed from Katey Brown (Craig, Neb./Guardian Angels Central Catholic) with 6:33 to go in the opening stanza. That would be S&T's last field goal as the Rangers (3-10, 1-4 GLVC) went on an 11-0 the rest of the quarter hitting three 3-pointers in the run.

The Lady Miners opened the second quarter by scoring 11 of the first 15 points to trim Parkside's lead to 23-17 three minutes into the period. Raley, Joe'l Bland (St. Charles, Mo./Homeschooled) and Jordan Kabetske (Republic, Mo./Republic) provided a spark off the bench as the trio accounted for all 11 points. The Rangers regrouped after a timeout extending their lead back to nine, S&T had its chances to cut into the lead but struggled to make shots. Parkside pushed its lead back to double digits with a 6-1 run late in the half before Raetchel Gray (Allen, Okla./Byng ) hit a jumper with 1:33 left in the half to make it an 11-point lead at halftime.

The Lady Miners shot just 36 percent (9-for-25) from the field in the first half, hit 3-of-6 attempts from long range but shot only 50 percent at the foul line. They outscored the Rangers 8-4 in points in the paint but were outscored in points off turnovers (11-8), second chance points (5-0) and bench points (17-14). Raley led S&T with six points while Greenwood, Bland and Kim Runge (Freedom, Wis./Freedom) added three points each.

Parkside shot close to 50 percent (15-for-34) from the floor in the first 20 minutes and was 4-of-9 from downtown. The Rangers outrebounded the Lady Miners 22-13 in the half and were led in scoring by Brittney Fair with eight points while Blair Arthur added seven off the bench.

Parkside used a 21-9 run over a six minute stretch in the third quarter to build its largest lead of the game at 58-35 on a jumper by Lauren Boerger. S&T cut the deficit to 15 points by the end of the stanza with an 11-3 run over the final 2:23. Arand had four points in the run while Gray added three.

In the final quarter the Lady Miners were able to cut the lead to 13 points multiple times but couldn't get over the hump shooting just 26 percent in the final period. They outscored the Rangers 18-17 in the last 10 minutes but it wouldn't be enough.

S&T shot 35 percent (22-for-63) from the field in the contest, they shot it well from three knocking down 8-of-16 attempts but struggled at the foul line making only 63 percent of their attempts. The Lady Miners finished the game with a 20-13 edge in points off turnovers. Raley matched her career-high in scoring in the contest while Arand reached double figures for the first time since the Missouri Baptist game and Kabetske had a career-high eight points.

Parkside finished the game shooting 49 percent (30-for-61) from the floor, went 7-of-16 from beyond the arc and shot 85 percent at the foul line. It outrebounded S&T 40-34 and blocked five shots in the contest. Fair led all scorers with 15 points and was joined in double figures by Boerger with 11 and Asiah Lawson added 10.

The Lady Miners are back in action next Thursday when they head to Indianapolis to take on the Greyhounds in a 4:30 p.m. (CST) tip-off. UIndy improved to 9-5 on the season after defeating Maryville 74-61 on Saturday.
