ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T held the top-ranked three-point shooting team in NCAA Division II to a season-low percentage from long range, but struggled with its own shooting Saturday afternoon as Wisconsin-Parkside handed the Miners a
72-54 Great Lakes Valley Conference loss at Billy Key Court.
The Rangers – who came into Saturday's game shooting 47.4 percent from beyond the arc – hit on just 26.9 percent of their tries (seven-of-26) in the game against a Miner unit that was ranked 10
th in three-point defense prior to this weekend's action.
However, the Miners only made 32.1 percent of their own tries and was good on only four-of-22 from three-point range themselves after entering the game having made better than 40 percent from long range on the year.
UW-Parkside never trailed in a game where both teams struggled to put points on the board for a good portion of the first half. The Rangers (12-1, 4-0 GLVC) allowed the Miners to score just six points in the first 10 minutes of the contest, but the Miners hung in the game with their defensive effort throughout that stretch as well and trailed by only five after
Juwan Miller (Kitchener, Ont./Huron Heights) hit two free throws just past the midway point of the half.
After the teams traded baskets on their ensuing possessions, the Rangers ran off 13 of the next 16 points to build a 15-point lead after Jake Verhagen drained a three-pointer at the 6:08 mark. The Miners cut the margin to under 10 before halftime on a
Quinn Poythress (Jackson, Mo./Notre Dame Regional) trey – the Miners' only successful three-point attempt in the first 20 minutes – but the Rangers would take an 11-point lead to the locker room.
The offensive struggles for both teams carried over into the second half, until UW-Parkside got threes from Alexander Brown and Verhagen on back-to-back possessions with just over nine minutes remaining. Moments later, the Rangers went on 12-1 run to build their biggest lead of the game with 5:40 to go in the game.
S&T had three players in double figures on the afternoon, led by Miller and
Randy Holmes (St. Louis, MO/Soldan International Studies) with 11 points apiece and
Danylo Zuikov (Kiev, Ukraine/LaLumiere School) with 10. The Miners also outrebounded the Rangers by one, but were guilty of 19 turnovers in the contest.
The Rangers, whose 40.7 percent mark from the floor was their second-lowest of the season and first game in seven at under 50 percent, got 17 points from Verhagen and 16 from Brown as they won for the 12
th straight time.
Missouri S&T (7-5, 1-4 GLVC) heads to the road for its next two GLVC outings, beginning with Thursday's game at Indianapolis that will get underway at 7:45 p.m. (Eastern time).
