Greyhounds' three-point barrage sinks Miners in Indy

1/12/2017 10:03:00 PM

Box Score INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Missouri S&T fell victim to a historic shooting performance Thursday night by Indianapolis, as the Greyhounds hit a school record 20 three-point baskets to send the Miners to a 114-83 Great Lakes Valley Conference loss.

The Miners shot 47.5 percent in the game and made nine of their 25 three-point attempts in the game, but it wasn't enough to keep pace with the Greyhounds' 63 percent shooting for the game and efficiency from long range, as they made their 20 three-pointers on 34 attempts.

After the teams went toe-to-toe during the opening minutes of play – S&T had a lead of 12-11 following a three-pointer by Randy Holmes (St. Louis, MO/Soldan International Studies) at the 14:54 mark – the Greyhounds used the three-point shot to begin building a lead.  UIndy hit its first six shots from beyond the arc, the last of them by Tate Hall that gave it a 22-13 advantage.

The Miners used a spurt late in the first half to cut what had been a 13-point Greyhound lead down to six in the final minute, but UIndy scored the final five points of the half – including Ajay Lawton's basket right before the buzzer – to take a 55-44 lead to the break.

Eric Davidson, who hit two of UIndy's 10 three-pointers in the first half, hit on the opening possession of the second half and as he got rolling, the Greyhound lead began to swell.  S&T was within seven at 65-58 after Holmes hit a three from in front of the Miner bench, but Davidson hit another on the next trip down the floor as he made his first six attempts from long range in the second half.

The last of the six treys, which came with 12:53 to go, was part of a 25-8 segment over a span of seven minutes that blew the game wide open.

Davidson would finish with a game-high 32 points and was one of six Greyhounds (6-7, 3-2 GLVC) in double figures.

Jalen Myers (Shorewood, IL/Minooka), who hit five treys for S&T on Thursday and Juwan Miller (Kitchener, Ont./Huron Heights) had 21 points apiece to lead S&T; the 21 points for Miller was a career best.  The Miners also got 13 points from Randy Holmes (St. Louis, MO/Soldan International Studies) and outrebounded the Greyhounds 34-32 as Miller had nine boards as well.

Missouri S&T (7-6, 1-5 GLVC) will head up the road to Rensselaer, Ind., to take on Saint Joseph's Saturday in a 3 p.m. contest.  The Pumas (7-8, 1-4 GLVC) lost 90-77 Thursday to Drury.
