S&T locked down by 16th ranked Lewis

Rolla, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners were held to a season-low 43 points in its 66-43 loss against 16th ranked Lewis on Thursday evening at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building. After shooting nearly 44 percent from the field in the opening quarter the Lady Miners (6-6, 1-3 GLVC) went ice cold the rest of the contest making only 12 of 42 shots and missed 15 straight three-pointers over the final two and a half quarters before a late three from Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern).

Lewis (12-2, 4-0 GLVC) scored the first bucket of the game on a jumper by Jessica Kelliher but S&T responded with seven straight, five from Elsie Greenwood (Breckenridge, Mo./Penney High School), to take its only lead of the contest 2:29 into the game. The Flyers countered with a 12-0 run as Kelliher and Erica Correa combined to score nine points during that run.

The Lady Miners trimmed the Lewis lead to 18-16 outscoring the Flyers 9-4 over the final 2:52 of the period. Sandra Douvier (Sedgwick, Kan./Sunrise Christian Academy) scored four of her eight points in that run and Raetchel Gray (Allen, Okla./Byng ) snapped nearly a five minute scoreless drought with a three-pointer.

The two sides went back-and-forth over the first three minutes of the second quarter and were tied at 21-21 with 7:09 to go in the frame after another three from Gray. Lewis regained the lead scoring the next seven points but despite shooting 25 percent in the quarter the Lady Miners cut the deficit to 28-25 with under 0:30 left in the half. The Flyers took a five-point lead into the locker after a pair of free throws by Kayla Brewer with 0:02 left.

S&T shot only 34 percent (11-for-32) from the floor in the first half and was led in scoring by Gray with six points while Greenwood chipped in with five. The Lady Miners were only outrebounded by two in the stanza and had a 6-2 edge in points off turnovers.

Lewis was slightly better knocking down 12-of-31 (38.7 percent) shots from the floor but the difference was the Flyers were 5-for-8 at the foul line compared to 0-of-2 for S&T. Kelliher led all scorers with eight first half points while Jamie Johnson dropped in six and Brewer and Correa had five each.

Lewis used a 7-2 run over the first 3:30 minutes of the third quarter to extend its lead to 37-27 on a three-pointer from Johnson. The Lady Miners cut the lead to six on back-to-back buckets from Douvier and Katey Brown (Craig, Neb./Guardian Angels Central Catholic) but wouldn't get any closer as the Flyers ended the frame scoring 14 of the final 16 points.  S&T had no answer for Kelliher and Johnson in the third quarter as the duo combined to score 14 of Lewis's 21 points.

The Flyers carried over their run into the final quarter scoring 10 of the first 14 points to build their largest lead of the game at 61-37 on a layup from Dajae Black with 3:42 remaining in the contest. The two sides would swap baskets the rest of the way.

The Lady Miners were held to 19-of-58 shooting from the field, they connected on only 4-of-23 attempts from beyond the arc and were held to a season-low four free throw attempts. S. Douvier led S&T with eight points while Greenwood added seven. Gray and Jamy Douvier (Sedgwick, Kan./Sunrise Christian Academy) dropped in six points each.

Lewis shot 10 points below its season average but still finished the game shooting 40 percent (24-for-60) from the floor, was 4-of-12 from three and 14-for-18 at the foul line. It outrebounded the Lady Miners 40-to-36 and had an 11-2 advantage in second chance points. Kelliher finished with a game-high 20 points while Johnson added 12.

S&T is back at home on Saturday when it hosts Wisconsin-Parkside in a 1 p.m. contest at Billy Key Court. The Rangers dropped an 87-50 contest at 12th ranked Drury on Thursday evening.
