Lewis breaks free from Miners with second half run

ROLLA, Mo. – After trimming a 13-point Lewis lead down to four by halftime, Missouri S&T succumbed to another Flyer run in the second half as Lewis handed the Miners an 83-62 Great Lakes Valley Conference loss Thursday night at Billy Key Court.

The Miners trailed 39-35 at halftime after trailing by 13 as late as the 6:22 mark of the first half, but Lewis hit S&T with a 22-4 burst over the first nine minutes after the intermission to send the hosts to their third straight loss overall and in conference play.

S&T had a lead of 3-2 in the first minute of play following a three-pointer by Randy Holmes (St. Louis, MO/Soldan International Studies), but Lewis rattled off six straight points to move in front and after a three-point play by Holmes, scored 10 straight to take a 12-point lead by the 14:36 mark.

Lewis eventually extended that advantage to 13 on two occasions, the second time on two Cristen Wilson free throws, before S&T chipped away at that lead over the next six minutes.

Back-to-back three-pointers by Juwan Miller (Kitchener, Ont./Huron Heights) and Jalen Myers (Shorewood, IL/Minooka) cut the lead to seven, then the Miners worked the lead down to two when Telloy Simon (Kitchener, Ont./St. Mary's) made a pair of free throws with 1:25 to play in the half.  A basket by Lewis' Miles Simelton late in the half gave the Flyers a four-point lead to take to the locker room.

Lewis quickly extended that lead to 14 in the first four-plus minutes of the second half, then pushed the margin to 22 by the 11:03 mark following Capel Henshaw's three-pointer, one of 10 made by the Flyers in the contest.  The closest the Miners would get after that was 17 in the final minutes of play.

S&T shot just 28.1 percent in the second half and finished the game at a season-low 36.2 percent, while the 62 points scored were the fewest by the Miners since last February's loss to Bellarmine.

Holmes was the only Miner in double figures Thursday as he finished with 18 points.  S&T also got nine points from Quinn Poythress (Jackson, Mo./Notre Dame Regional) and eight from Juwan Miller (Kitchener, Ont./Huron Heights).

Simelton led four Flyers (8-5, 3-0 GLVC) in double figures with 18 points, as Lewis shot 47.1 percent from the field and outrebounded the Miners 45-32.

Missouri S&T (7-4, 1-3 GLVC) will host Wisconsin-Parkside Saturday in a 1 p.m. contest at Billy Key Court.
