Truman’s three-point shooting too much for S&T

Kirksville, Mo. – In its previous three games the Missouri S&T Lady Miners did a good job defending the three-point line holding opponents to just 11-for-56 shooting but on Saturday the Lady Miners (8-11, 3-8 GLVC) allowed Truman State to shoot 62 percent from downtown in an 89-56 loss at Pershing Arena in Kirksville, Mo. The loss snapped S&T's two game winning streak while the Bulldogs improved to 10-10, 5-6 in the GLVC.

Truman State opened the game scoring 12 of the first 14 points to build an early 10-point lead behind five points from Rachel Edmundson. The Lady Miners cut the lead to eight points on a couple of occasions but were unable to get over the hump as the Bulldogs ended the first quarter an 11-2 run to take a 17-point lead into the quarter break. S&T made only 3-of-13 field goals in the quarter while Truman State 9-for-14 and 5-of-7 from three.

The Lady Miners trimmed the lead to 15 points early in the second quarter but the Bulldogs used a 13-6 run over the next 2:35 to build a 42-20 lead. S&T closed the half outscoring the 'Dogs 7-4 to cut the deficit to 19 at the half. The Lady Miners were led in scoring by Janie Arand (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) with seven points while Elsie Greenwood (Breckenridge, Mo./Penney High School) added six.

Truman State was led in scoring by Sloane Totta with 12 points while Cassidy Clarke and Brooke Bailey added eight points each.

S&T opened the third quarter scoring seven of the 10 first points to cut the Bulldog lead to 15 but were never able to get closer than that as Truman countered with a 13-4 run over the next five minutes to build a 62-38 on a pair of free throws from Jamie Gleason with 2:12 left in the stanza. The 'Dogs would take a 25-point lead into the final quarter.

Truman State dominated the fourth quarter outscoring S&T by eight points in the frame and led by as many as 36 points on a three-pointer by Maddie Tharp with 2:41 to play. The Lady Miners struggled to make shots in the final quarter as well making only three of 15 attempts from the floor.

S&T finished the game shooting 32 percent (19-for-59) from the floor, was 3-of-11 from three and shot 63 percent at the foul line (15-for-24). It was outrebounded by Truman 44-25 in the contest but did force the Bulldogs to commit 20 turnovers and had 12 steals.
