Quincy, Ill. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners shot 53 percent from the field and matched its season-high with 30 field goals made in its 72-59 win at Quincy on Thursday evening. S&T (8-10, 3-7 GLVC) led for a majority of the game and was led in scoring by
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) with a career-high 16 points while
Janie Arand (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) and
Elsie Greenwood (Breckenridge, Mo./Penney High School) added 13 points each.
The Lady Miners opened the game scoring six of the first eight points but the Lady Hawks (4-16, 1-9 GLVC) got four straight points from Selina Barnes to tie the game at 6 with 7:40 left in the opening quarter.
Jamy Douvier (Sedgwick, Kan./Sunrise Christian Academy) gave S&T back the lead for a good with a jumper. That jumper sparked an 11-0 run for the Lady Miners. Quincy got as close as 17-10 with 0:39 left in the frame but a jumper from
Aricca Daye (Des Moines, Iowa/Des Moines East) gave the Lady Miners a nine-point lead at the quarter break. S&T shot 57 percent in the opening quarter while the Lady Hawks shot just 33 percent.
The Lady Miners opened the second quarter hitting three straight three-pointers, two from Raley, to extend its lead to 18 points. The lead eventually grew to 19 points but Quincy was able to trim the lead to 37-23 by halftime. S&T finished the half making 16 of 29 shots from the floor (55.1 percent), and was 4-for-5 from the three-point line. Greenwood and Raley led all scorers with eight points each in the half. The Lady Miners had a 7-0 edge in points off turnovers and 19-5 in bench points.
S&T opened the third quarter scoring the first five points to push its lead back to 19 points after a free throw from Douvier. The Lady Hawks were able to stay in the game thanks to its shooting at the foul line as they made 9 of 11 at the charity stripe. The Lady Miners still outscored Quincy 23-21 in the frame and headed to the final quarter with a 16-point advantage.
S&T again stretched its lead to 19 by the midway point of the final stanza and never saw its lead dip below double digits the rest of the way. The Lady Hawks scored the final six points of the game to make the final margin 13 points.
The Lady Miners shot only 33 percent in the final quarter but still finished the game making 30 of 57 shots from the field. S&T matched their season-high of eight three-pointers made for the third straight game. Raley knocked down her first six shots including all four three's to lead all scorers. The Lady Miners had a 36-30 advantage on the glass and shared the ball well recording 17 assists on their 30 made field goals.
S&T continues its four game road trip on Saturday afternoon traveling to Kirksville, Mo., to take on Truman State at 1 p.m. The Bulldogs fell to 12
th ranked Drury 64-57 on Thursday evening.
