Fast start propels Lady Miners past Cardinals 62-52

Rolla, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners used a fast start defeating William Jewell 62-52 and snapped a seven-game losing streak on Saturday at Billy Key Court. S&T (7-10, 2-7 GLVC) shot 60 percent from the field and was 4-for-6 from the three-point in the opening quarter which saw it outscore the Cardinals (7-9, 3-5 GLVC) 21-8.

The Lady Miners opened the game on an 11-2 run behind five points from Janie Arand (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) and three from Raetchel Gray (Allen, Okla./Byng ). Jewell would cut the lead to 13-6 on a jumper from Maddie Nelson but S&T got back-to-back three's from Arand and Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) to extend the lead to 13 with 2:05 left in the opening frame. The Cardinals cut the lead to 19-8 with just over minute left then Arand added a pair of free throws to push the lead back to 13. She finished with 12 of her game-high 18 points in the quarter with perfect shooting making three field goals, two three's and four free throws.

S&T scored seven of the first eight points to begin the second quarter and extended its lead to its largest of the contest at 28-9 on a layup from Elsie Greenwood (Breckenridge, Mo./Penney High School) with 6:53 left in the half. The lead stayed around that margin for the next two-plus minutes before WJC ended the half on a 7-2 run over the final 3:35 to cut the lead to 14 at the break. The 14-point halftime lead was the largest for the Lady Miners in a game this season.

S&T finished the first 20 minutes shooting 57 percent (12-for-21) from the floor, was 6-of-12 from three and shot 88 percent at the foul line. Raley finished with 13 points in the half to lead all scorers while Arand added 12.

The Cardinals were held to 33 percent (9-for-27) from the field, went 2-of-7 from downtown and shot 75 percent at the charity stripe. Nelson and Lindsey McCoy led William Jewell with six points each in the half.

The Lady Miners struggled shooting the ball in the third quarter making only 4-of-13 shots but the Cardinals weren't much better shooting just 36 percent in the frame but they were able to cut the lead to 47-35 by the end of the quarter.

William Jewell kept the pressure on early in the fourth quarter scoring 10 of the first 14 points cutting S&T's lead to 51-45 after a three-pointer from Nelson with 6:45 left in the contest. Gray answered on the other end hitting a driving layup and then a couple of possessions later Greenwood buried a three-pointer from the left wing extending the lead back to double digits. Kayla Harrell hit a pair of free throws bringing the Cardinals back within 56-47 but Greenwood hit another three from exactly the same spot on the ensuing possession extending the lead to 59-47.

The Cardinals wouldn't get closer than 10 points the rest of the way but S&T didn't do its self any favors down the stretch making only 3-of-9 attempts at the foul line in the final 1:40. Nelson capped the scoring with a three-pointer with 0:13 left.

After their hot shooting in the first half the Lady Miners cooled in the second half but still shot 48 (21-for-44) from the field, they matched a season-high with eight three-pointers made but were only 12-of-21 at the foul line. Arand and Raley were the lone S&T players in double figures while Greenwood added nine. Gray and Jamy Douvier (Sedgwick, Kan./Sunrise Christian Academy) each had seven rebounds apiece.

William Jewell was held to 33 percent (18-for-55) shooting, was 7-for-23 from beyond the arc and 9-for-10 at the foul line. Nelson led the Cardinals with 14 points and Katie Finn added 13 with 10 of those coming in the second half.

The Lady Miners hit the road for the first of four straight away from home next Thursday when they travel to Quincy, Ill., to take on the Quincy Hawks in a 5:15 p.m. contest from Pepsi Arena. The Hawks fell at Maryville 59-51 on Saturday.
