Rolla, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners dug themselves an early into its season opener against Lindenwood on Tuesday but a valiant comeback effort game up a goal short in a 4-3 loss.
Lindenwood (3-0) scored the first goal of the game in the sixth minute. Becky Roberts served a corner kick into the box to Kat Roe. Roe took a shot that was deflected and fell to Taylor Wade who put it into an open net for her first of the season. The Lions struck again in the 10
th minute as Roe knocked in a free kick from 20 yards out that deflected off of
Karen Nightingale (Ellisville, Mo./Marquette)'s hands for her second of the season.
Lindenwood wasn't done as Roberts hammered home a shot from 25 yards out just nine minutes later for her third of the season.
The Lady Miners got a goal back in the 36
th minute off a free kick.
Anna Fink (Fulton, Mo./Fulton) served a ball into the box that
Julia Crets (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North) was able to get a head on and send it across the box inside the left post for her first collegiate goal. S&T had another chance in the final minute of the half but
Mikaela Mockenhaupt (Oswego, Ill./Oswego)'s shot was saved by the keeper.
The Lions finished the first half with a 9-5 edge in shots but the shots on goal were even at 2-2. Each side attempted three corner kicks.
S&T had a couple of chances early in the second half but weren't able to find the back of the net again until the 71
st minute. After a foul Lindenwood, Fink lined up along the left sideline and hit a free kick from 35 yards out that went over the keeper's head and inside the far post for her first collegiate goal.
Lindenwood extended its lead in the 76
th minute taking advantage of a Lady Miner miscue.
Morgan Sikora (Highland, Ill./Highland) tracked down a long ball and tried to play it back to Nightingale but the ball got past her and Roberts was there to put it into an empty net.
S&T got that goal back with just over a minute to go in the game. Crets won the ball and sent a pass cross field to Mockenhaupt who beat a defender and blasted a shot past the keeper for her first of the year.
The Lady Miners had one more chance getting a corner kick with 0:27 left but was unable to score the equalizer.
S&T outshot the Lions 6-5 in the second half but were outshot for the game 14-11. The Lady Miners did have the edge in shots on goal at 6-5 and in corner kicks 7-6.
S&T continues its homestand on Friday night when it opens Great Lakes Valley Conference play against Saint Joseph's College beginning at 5 p.m.
