Miners blank West Florida for first win of season

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team broke into the win column for the first time in the 2016 season Sunday as it blanked West Florida 3-0 to close out its weekend trip to the Gulf Coast.

S&T, which played to a 1-1 tie in its season opener Friday at Spring Hill, got two goals from Felipe Andrade (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) to help back a shutout performance in goal by Aaron Hohenstein (St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South) to pick up its first win heading into the start of Great Lakes Valley Conference play in the upcoming weekend.

Andrade, who scored S&T's goal in Friday's contest, got the Miners on the scoreboard in the 24th minute of play as he pounced on a rebound of a shot by Will McIntyre (Queenstown, New Zealand) that was stopped by UWF goalkeeper Phil D'Amico and put in into an open net.

McIntyre doubled the Miner advantage just a minute prior to halftime as he got a feed from Matt Kilwin (St. Louis, MO/Chaminade College Prep) and hit a shot from the wing past D'Amico to make it 2-0.

The Argonauts (0-2), who had a 14-9 advantage in shots in the contest, tried to turn up matters on the offensive end in the second half, but the S&T and Hohenstein held firm to maintain the two-goal lead until Andrade struck again in the 76th minute with an unassisted goal into the top corner of the net.

Hohenstein, a newcomer to the Miner program this season, recorded his first shutout at S&T by turning away all four shots on goal.  The Argonauts also had numerous chances as they got six corner kick opportunities in the final 45 minutes.

The Miners will open their home and GLVC schedule Friday by taking on Saint Joseph's in a 7:30 p.m. contest at the S&T Soccer Field.  The last time the teams faced off, the Miners won a penalty kick shootout over the Pumas to advance in the opening round of the GLVC Tournament.
