ROLLA, Mo. – Starting its Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule two days later than expected, Missouri S&T's men's soccer team played to a
scoreless draw Sunday with Indianapolis at the S&T Soccer Field.
The Miners, who had their scheduled GLVC opener postponed Friday due to lightning, were outshot in Sunday's match by a wide margin – particularly in the second half – but got a big performance in from goalkeeper
Aaron Hohenstein (St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South) and the defense in front of him to keep the Greyhounds off the scoreboard.
After UIndy outshot S&T 8-6 in the first 45 minutes of play, the Greyhounds made a surge on the offensive end at the outset of the second half. UIndy took the first 11 shots after the break, but Hohenstein made a number of big saves to keep it scoreless.
One of the biggest saves in that span came in the 58
th minute, when UIndy was awarded a penalty kick, but he stopped the attempt by Josh Ling.
Hohenstein made seven of his 11 saves in the game during the second half of play.
The Miners had perhaps their best scoring chance in the final minutes of regulation time when
Felipe Andrade (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) got free behind the Greyhound defense. Andrade was stopped twice in succession by UIndy goalkeeper Miles Palmer, however, and the teams played a pair of scoreless 10-minute period following the end of regulation time.
UIndy (2-1-1, 0-1-1 GLVC), who was ranked just outsde the top 25 in NCAA Division II this week, had a 28-12 advantage in shots and had 14 corner kick chances to three for S&T. Palmer stopped all seven S&T shots on net for the Greyhounds.
Andrade had three of the Miners' 12 shots in the contest.
Missouri S&T (1-0-2, 0-0-1 GLVC) will head to the road Friday to face Wisconsin-Parkside in conference play.
