Lions send Miners to first loss of season

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T saw its school record unbeaten streak to begin a season come to an end Wednesday night, as Lindenwood took a two-goal lead early in the second half and held on for a 3-2 win over the Miners at the S&T Soccer Field.

The Miners, who had not lost in their first seven games of the year, got on the scoreboard just under two minutes after the game began when it got two corner kick opportunities.  After the first one was deflected out of bounds, the second one taken by Unnar Ulfarsson (Gardabaer, Iceland/Fjolnir Reykjavik) was headed in by Garrett Trautman (Amory, MS/Amory) for his first career goal 1:50 into play.

But after that early goal, the Lions had the Miners under siege for the next several minutes and eventually tied the game in the 28th minute when Gabriel Jaimes got to a loose ball about 10 yards in front of the net and hit it past S&T goalkeeper Nick Posey (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville).

Lindenwood proceeded to take the lead seven minutes later on a goal by Nijaz Muratovic and would take that 2-1 into halftime.

Shortly after the second half started, the Lions (6-2-2) added to their lead when the nation's fifth-leading scorer, Xhovani Dokaj, got a shot by Posey to make it 3-1.

The Miners cut the margin to one in the 58th minute when Mike Scharf (Wildwood, MO/Lafayette) sent a ball ahead to Austin Parks (Rolla, MO/Rolla), who got the ball by a defender to get free and hit a shot past Aleksa Nenadic.

S&T kept the attack on the Lindenwood end of the field for much of the final 30 minutes, but couldn't get the tying goal.  The best chance came with just two minutes remaining after a foul gave the Miners a free kick just outside the box, but Ulfarsson rattled a shot off the crossbar.

The Lions had a 16-10 advantage in shots in the game and had four corner kick opportunities to two for S&T. Posey finished with four saves in goal for the Miners.

The Miners, 3-1-4 overall, return to Great Lakes Valley Conference play Friday when they host Missouri-St. Louis at 7:30 p.m.
