Miners get pair from Andrade to knock off Tritons

ROLLA, Mo. – In a clash of two teams that entered the night without a loss in Great Lakes Valley Conference play, Missouri S&T remained that way as it got two goals from Felipe Andrade (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) to bump off Missouri-St. Louis 3-1 at the S&T Soccer Field.

The Miners, who suffered their first loss of the season Wednesday in a non-conference tilt with Lindenwood, bounced back by taking control of matters early in the contest against a Triton team that entered the game with a seven-game unbeaten streak – which included a tie against a Rockhurst team currently ranked as the top team in NCAA Division II.

In the 10th minute of play, Will McIntyre (Queenstown, New Zealand) sent a feed into the box to Unnar Ulfarsson (Gardabaer, Iceland/Fjolnir Reykjavik), who hit a shot by UMSL goalkeeper Jack Filla to put the Miners into the lead.

S&T extended the advantage in the 27th minute when Ulfarsson sent a long pass from his own end of the field that went over the Triton defenders and sprung Andrade on a breakaway and he beat Filla to make it 2-0.

The Miners outshot the Tritons 9-7 in the first half of the play that ended with S&T holding the two-goal lead, but UMSL cut it half in the first five minutes of the second half when Jake Meyerkord took a shot that was stopped by Miner goalkeeper Aaron Hohenstein (St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South) – but got to his own rebound and scored the unassisted goal.

UMSL continued to put pressure on the Miner defense for a period of time after getting the goal, but the Miners eventually regrouped and were able to add to the lead in the 75th minute when Andrade and McIntyre forced the Tritons to lose the ball in their own end.

Andrade ended up getting free again after the Miners got possession and gave S&T a big insurance goal when he beat Filla from 15 yards away.

S&T held a 16-13 advantage in shots for the game as Hohenstein was credited with five saves.

Missouri S&T improved to 4-1-4 overall and 3-0-3 in the GLVC with Friday's win, while the Tritons fell to 6-2-1 and 5-1-1 in the conference.   S&T and Rockhurst, at 6-0-1, are the only remaining teams in the GLVC without a loss in league play following Friday's action.

The Miners will wrap up their three-game homestand Sunday when they host Maryville (5-4, 2-4 GLVC) in a 2:30 p.m. contest at the S&T Soccer Field.  The Saints upended Drury 2-1 Friday night in Springfield.
