Miners seek back-to-back GLVC wins as Cardinals come to town

Game Coverage: Game Notes Live Video (GLVCSN) Live Audio Live Stats

ROLLA, Mo. -- After recording its second-highest point total ever in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game, Missouri S&T will look for its second straight win Saturday night when it hosts William Jewell on Miner Hall of Fame Night at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.

The Miners put 54 points on the scoreboard Saturday -- including 44 in a row in one stretch -- to beat Saint Joseph's 54-21 in Rensselaer, Ind.  S&T got big offensive games from Ray Mullen (Palm Springs, CA/Palm Springs) and Dalton Major (Bourbonnais, IL/Bishop McNamara) in the win, while the Miner defense held the Pumas to just 281 yards and one offensive score while the game was in the balance.

Saturday's opponent, William Jewell, comes into the contest at 0-4 after a 28-14 setback at McKendree last week.  However, the Cardinals were also 0-4 a year ago when they hooked up with S&T and handed the Miners a 40-16 loss in Liberty, Mo.

At halftime of Saturday's game, the five newest members of the Miner Hall of Fame – Molly (Balke) Lincoln, Stacy (Mathes) Wise, Clint Moss, Dr. Paul Stricker and Brian Westre, along with the 2004 softball team – will be honored upon their induction. (Link)

ABOUT THE MINERS: After falling behind 14-7 in the opening quarter of play, Missouri S&T rattled off 44 unanswered points and rolled to a 54-21 win at Saint Joseph's last week for its first GLVC victory.

Ray Mullen (Palm Springs, CA/Palm Springs) hauled in a 67-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Swart (Dickinson, TX/Dickinson) early in the second quarter to get the scoring run started, one of two scoring catches on the day for Mullen, who had career highs of seven catches for 148 yards.

Swart completed 15-of-25 passes for 240 yards in the win and has connected on 58.6 percent of his throws for 891 yards and 10 touchdowns for the league's highest scoring offense, one averaging 41 points per game.

Braxton Graham (Seneca, MO/Seneca) has a team-high 19 receptions for 353 yards and three scores, while Mullen has 15 catches for 246 yards.  Dalton Major (Bourbonnais, IL/Bishop McNamara), who had 101 yards on the ground that included a touchdown run of 51 yards, has a team-high 201 on the year and Charles Bournes (Chicago, IL/Morgan Park) scored a pair of touchdowns on the ground in last week's victory.

As the Miners outscored the Pumas 37-0 in the second and third quarters of play, the S&T defense held SJC to just 63 yards of total offense during that stretch.

Landon Compton (Lamar, MO/Lamar) leads the Miners with 40 tackles on the year after he posted 10 with two for a loss a week ago.  Compton also leads the Miners with three sacks -- S&T has 10 as a team in the first four weeks -- and 7.5 tackles for a loss.

Bo Brooks (Canutillo, TX/Canutillo) has been in on 20 stops and Bret Curtis (Lombard, IL/Glenbard South) has made 18.  The Miners have averaged eight stops for a loss per game this season.

ABOUT WILLIAM JEWELL:  The Cardinals enter the game still seeking their first win of the 2016 season after falling at McKendree last week 28-14.

Jewell got a 98-yard kickoff return from Darmarcus Robinson to tie the contest early on, but was unable to get its running game established as it threw the ball on 55 of its 88 offensive plays.

Quarterback Jared Hobby completed 36 of those throws for 238 yards and has completed 64.6 percent of his passes this season for 632 yards and four scores.  His top target has been Anthony Mullins, who has 23 receptions for 291 yards, while Grant Bulla has three touchdown catches.

Mullins, who returned a kickoff for a touchdown in the Cardinals' win over S&T last October, has joined Robinson as a dangerous return duo as both are averaging better than 21 yards per kickoff return.  Robinson also has 158 yards on the ground to lead the Jewell rushing attack.

On defense, the Cardinals are led in tackles by Isaac Dozier with 34 stops, while Quadye Bauman has been in on 31 tackles which includes four for a loss.  Jewell also got interceptions from Andrew Pence and Justice Taylor in Saturday's game, two of the three recorded by the Cardinals this season.
