S&T falls to 13th ranked Bulldogs 2-0

Kirksville, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners dropped a 2-0 contest at 13th ranked Truman State on Sunday afternoon. S&T got nine shots off and put six of those on goal but were unable to get anything past Katie Mattingly who posted her sixth shutout of the season.

Truman (7-0-1, 6-0 GLVC) broke on top with a goal 8:27 into the contest when Megan Whitehead beat Karen Nightingale (Ellisville, Mo./Marquette) on the left side off a ball served in by Casey Maloney for her first of the season. The Lady Miners (1-5, 1-4 GLVC) had a chance at an equalizer nearly seven minutes later as Riley Cronin (Albuquerque, N. M./Sandia Prep) tried to head a shot past Mattingly but was turned away.

The Bulldogs extended their lead in the 20th minute on a goal from Hanna Burke. Burke scored off a corner kick from Whitehead and Allison Lockett for her third goal of the season. S&T had back-to-back chances about a minute apart later in the half to get on the board but Kayla Foster (Sand Springs, Okla./Charles Page) and Sarah Hostler (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy)'s shots were saved.

TSU had a 7-4 edge in shots in the first 45 minutes with each team registering four shots on goal.

The Bulldogs started the second half looking to extend their lead taking five shots in the first four-plus minutes but Nightingale made two saves and the defense blocked another shot. The Lady Miners tried to get on the board in the 61st minute but had a pair of shots blocked by the Truman defense.

Leah Camery (Anchorage, Alaska/Steller Secondary School) then tried to get S&T on the scoreboard in the 68th minute but her shot attempt was saved by Mattingly. The Lady Miners put another couple of shots toward the Bulldog net in the closing minutes but Julie Bride (Stilwell, Kan./St. Thomas Aquinas)'s header attempt was saved by Mattingly and Johanna Jeffryes (Anchorage, Alaska/Dimond) had a shot blocked.

Truman finished the game outshooting the Lady Miners 19-9, but the shots on goal were just 7-6 in the Bulldogs favor. The 'Dogs also held a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.
