Miners close road trip with victory at Truman State

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Missouri S&T extended its unbeaten streak to start the 2016 season to seven games Sunday as it closed out a four-game stretch on the road with a 2-1 win at Truman State.

S&T improved to 3-0-4 on the year and 2-0-3 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play with the win, as it set a new record for the most consecutive games to start a season without a loss.  The current seven-game run is the longest by a Miner team since 1999 and two short of the school record set a year prior to that.

The Miners wasted little time in getting the lead, as Felipe Andrade (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) took a pass from Mike Scharf (Wildwood, MO/Lafayette) and beat Truman goalkeeper Zac Suazo to his left just 2:24 into play.

The goal by Andrade came on the only shot on goal by either team in the first 45 minutes of play, a half where the Bulldogs held a 4-3 overall advantage in shots.

When the second half began, it started in similar fashion to the first as the Miners scored shortly after the kickoff.   In this case, it was Tyler Sivadon (Spring, TX/Concordia Lutheran) who notched his first goal as a Miner.

S&T got a corner kick opportunity just over 90 seconds after the half began and the initial shot by Trey Haman (St. Louis, MO/St. Louis University HS) was blocked by the defense, but Sivadon got the ball from Scharf and headed it by Suazo to give the Miners a two-goal lead.

The Bulldogs cut that lead in half nearly seven minutes later on a goal by Nate Luebbert, but the Miners tightened the screws on the defensive end as Truman got only two more shots on net over the next 30 minutes.

With just under five minutes remaining in regulation time, Hohenstein stopped a shot by Brian Kane and a rebound effort by Luebbert to maintain the lead for S&T.

Truman (3-4-1, 1-4 GLVC) outshot the Miners 14-7 in the contest as Hohenstein finished the game with five saves – all in the second half.

The Miners return home for a three-game homestand this week, beginning with two huge challenges as they host a 5-2-2 Lindenwood squad Wednesday at 7 p.m. and Missouri-St. Louis Friday at 7:30 p.m.  Lindenwood is on a five-game unbeaten streak of its own and has won four in a row, while UMSL is 6-1-1 on the season and not lost since a season-opening setback to Lindenwood.
