Indianapolis, Ind. – The Missouri S&T Miner volleyball squad dropped its third straight on Friday falling to the Indianapolis Greyhounds in straight sets at the Ruth Lilly Center in Indianapolis, Ind.
S&T (3-8, 0-3 GLVC) got off to a great start scoring six of the first eight points to begin the match and forced the Greyhounds (4-7, 2-1 GLVC) to take a timeout. Out of the timeout the 'Hounds used a 16-9 run to overcome the deficit. The Miners cut the deficit to 18-17 but four straight points by UIndy made it 22-17 and S&T wouldn't get closer than three points the rest of the way as the 'Hounds took the opener 25-20.
UIndy led throughout the second set and had a lead as large as four at the midway point but the Miners started to chip away at the lead and got within 18-17 on a service from
Alexis White (Auburn, Wash./Riverside). The 'Hounds countered with three straight points but S&T continued to fight eventually cutting the lead to 23-22 and forced UIndy to call a timeout. The 'Hounds scored the final two points of the stanza to win it 25-22 and head into the intermission with the 2-0 lead.
S&T started the third set strong scoring six of the first nine points but were unable to maintain it as the Greyhounds went on a 7-0 run to regain the lead. That lead eventually grew to 22-16 but the Miners went on a 7-1 run to even the set at 23 on a double block from
Caroline Dykes (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence) and
Ellen Schulz (Wildwood, Mo./Eureka). The 'Hounds regained the lead on a kill from Becca Lira to get to match point at 24-23.
S&T staved off a match point and then got to set point on a kill from
Carlie Combs (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) to make it 25-24. The Miners couldn't close it out on their first attempt as UIndy got back-to-back points to retake the lead at 26-25 and get its second match point. Schulz extended the match with a kill and then the Greyhounds got their third match point on a Kacee Salyers kill.
A pair of kills by
Carson Talley (St. Louis, Mo./Affton) sandwiched around an Anna Fehribach kill kept the set tied at 28. Maggie Gibson gave UIndy another match point but a service error evened the frame back up at 29. After a Lira kill made it 30-29 the 'Hounds were able to end the match on a block of Dykes to win the set 31-29.
S&T finished the match recording 41 kills and had an attack percentage of .126.
Claire Friedlund (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South) led the Miners with 10 kills while Combs and
Carson Talley (St. Louis, Mo./Affton) had nine kills each. White dished out 36 assists and
Corinne Stulce (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne) had 21 digs.
UIndy finished the match hitting .220 recording 47 kills in 127 attempts. Fehribach finished with a match-high 13 kills while Salyers and Katie Voelz added nine kills apiece. Remi Bowman distributed 37 assists and Bri Heffernan and Salyers had 13 digs each.
S&T is back in action on Saturday afternoon taking on Saint Joseph's College beginning at 3 p.m. in Rensselaer, Ind.
