QUINCY, Ill. – The Miners saw two streaks come to an end Friday night, but thanks to a late goal by
Unnar Ulfarsson (Gardabaer, Iceland/Fjolnir Reykjavik), kept another one alive as they played to a
2-2 tie at Quincy.
S&T had not allowed a goal in over four games, but the Hawks broke that streak in the opening minutes of the contest. However, the tie marked the sixth straight game without a loss for the Miners – matching the most at the start of a season in school history – and ended an eight-game losing streak to Quincy in the process.
The Miners overcame a quick Quincy flurry at the start of the contest and were able to get the game tied in the final moments of regulation time the goal by Ulfarsson, then held off another late flurry by the Hawks at the end of the second overtime.
Quincy's Taylor Reis ended the Miners' run of scoreless minutes at 462 when he scored in the game's fourth minute, then the Hawks added to the lead 12 minutes later on a goal by Artan Emini.
Felipe Andrade (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) got the Miners on the scoreboard just 2:37 after the Emini goal, as he scored on a deflection from Ulfarsson to cut the Quincy advantage to 2-1.
After the three goals in the first 16 minutes of action, the teams settled into the contest as the game reached halftime without another goal being scored.
In the second half, after the Hawks missed a chance to extend the lead when Pete Condol rattled a shot off the crossbar, the Miners had their own good chance to even things up with about 12 minutes to go in regulation time when a shot by
Austin Parks (Rolla, MO/Rolla) was cleared off the end line by the Quincy defense.
With just over three minutes left, the Miners made a counterattack after
Aaron Hohenstein (St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South) stopped a shot by Reis and
Will McIntyre (Queenstown, New Zealand) got the ball ahead to Ulfarrson, who hit a shot from 21 yards away into the left corner to tie it up and force overtime.
Reis had the only shot of the first overtime period and hit it over the net, while McIntyre had a chance a minute into the second extra period and shot it wide. Three minutes later, Andrade tried to head in a corner kick and put that effort wide of the net.
With under three minutes to go, the Miner defense stopped two Quincy tries in front to win it, one by Jordan Stephens and the other by Reis to keep the game tied. Then, following a free kick in the final seconds, Hohenstein stopped a shot by Chris McArthur to end the contest.
Quincy (3-2-2, 1-2-2 GLVC) had a 17-11 advantage in shots in the game; Hohenstein finished the night with nine saves.
S&T's other start with six straight games without a loss came in 2000, when it won its first six outings of that campaign.
The Miners, now 2-0-4 overall and 1-0-3 in the GLVC, will wrap up their four-game stretch away from home – which will be followed by three-game homestand that will begin Wednesday against Lindenwood – when they face Truman State in a 2:30 p.m. contest in Kirksville, Mo.
