MOBILE, Ala. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team got its 2016 season started Friday by playing to a
1-1 tie with Spring Hill College.
The Miners drew first blood in the contest, as
Felipe Andrade (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) got to a ball in front of the net and hit a shot from about eight yards away past SHC goalkeeper Will Carpenter in the game's 20
th minute.
S&T took that 1-0 lead into halftime and continued to hold the advantage until the 68
th minute of play, when Dante Oliver tapped in a cross from Ryan Elder to knot the score at one.
The Miners had two shots in the final moments of the first overtime period and had the only two shots in the second extra period, including a head ball attempt by
Eric Ferenbach (Godfrey, IL/Alton) that Carpenter stopped with under two minutes remaining.
Missouri S&T held an 11-10 advantage in shots in game and goalkeeper
Aaron Hohenstein (St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South) turned away two of the three Badger shots on goal.
Friday's game marked the first time since 2012 that the Miners opened a season by playing to a tie.
The Miners close their two-game opening weekend on the Gulf Coast Sunday when they face West Florida in an 11 a.m. contest in Pensacola, Fla.
