Romeoville, Ill. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners couldn't overcome an early deficit in its 3-1 loss at Lewis on Sunday afternoon.
Kayla Foster (Sand Springs, Okla./Charles Page) scored for the second straight game off an assist from
Sarah Hostler (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) in the 66
th minute.
Lewis (4-2-1, 2-1-1 GLVC) scored the game's first goal in the fifth a minute when Meg Carmody notched her fourth goal on the year off an assist by Karlie Perkins. S&T (1-3, 1-2 GLVC) had a couple of chances 20 minutes later.
Mikaela Mockenhaupt (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) tried to head one in but Jennifer Meyer knocked it out of play for a corner kick. Off the corner
Taylor Vollmer (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West) sent one into the box that
Morgan Sikora (Highland, Ill./Highland) headed wide.
The Lady Miners had another chance 10 minutes later when Mockenhaupt tried beat Meyer with another header but Meyer was able to make the save. The Flyers added to its lead in the 43
rd minute on a goal by Angela Toritto. Toritto beat her defender and shot it over
Karen Nightingale (Ellisville, Mo./Marquette) for her first goal of the season.
Despite trailing by two at the break S&T outshot Lewis 5-4 in the first 45 minutes and put three of those on goal but were unable to get one past Meyer.
The Flyers stretched their lead to 3-0 early in the second half when Kailey Parnello headed home a corner kick from Jessica Chavez for her first of the season.
The Lady Miners got one of those back about 8:30 later. Hostler took a shot that was blocked and it went to Foster who put it in the back of the net for her second of the year.
Carli Tastad (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West) tried to make it a one goal with less than 10 minutes to play but her shot was blocked.
Both teams finished the game with nine shots each while S&T outshot Lewis 5-4 in shots on goal and had a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
The Lady Miners continue their four game road swing on Friday against the Quincy Lady Hawks in Quincy, Ill., at 5 p.m.
