Rolla, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Miner volleyball squad had its 10-match home winning streak snapped in a 3-1 loss to the 15
th ranked Lewis Flyers on Friday night. S&T struggled to get its offense going for majority of the match hitting just .101 and committed 10 more attack errors than the Flyers.
Each team recorded 12 kills in the opening set but Lewis (6-3, 1-0 GLVC) committed five fewer errors in the frame and outhit the Miners (3-6, 0-1 GLVC) .200-to-.048.
Carson Talley (St. Louis, Mo./Affton) and
Claire Friedlund (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South) combined for nine of S&T's 12 kills in the stanza but the defense struggled to stop Aly Schneider and Maddie Seliga who had eight kills combined in the frame.
Lewis built a four-point lead midway through the opening set but the Miners got back to within 18-17 on a kill by Talley. The Flyers ended the frame scoring seven of the last 10 points to take the opener 25-20.
Lewis dominated the second set scoring four of the first five points and had a seven point lead by the midway point of the frame. S&T cut the deficit to 21-16 but didn't get any closer than that as the Flyers scored four of the last five points to head into the intermission with a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Miners trailed by as many as three in the third set before making a late charge to tie the frame on a kill by
Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston).
Caitlin Brocker (Crystal Lake, Ill./Marian Central ) followed with a service ace to give S&T its first set point of the night and forced Lewis to take a timeout. Alexandra Preuss extended the frame with a kill but the Miners closed it out with back-to-back kills from Schlader and Talley to force a fourth set.
S&T trailed 6-5 in the fourth frame before the Flyers went on a 10-0 run to extend their lead to 11 points and forced the Miners to call both of their timeouts in the run. S&T didn't get closer than nine points the rest of the set as Lewis won 25-11 to win the match.
The Miners finished the match recording 44 kills against 28 errors in 159 total attacks. Talley led the way with 12 kills with Friedlund adding 11 kills.
Alexis White (Auburn, Wash./Riverside) dished out 36 set assists while
Corinne Stulce (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne) had 17 digs.
The Flyers ended the match registering 57 kills against 18 errors in 151 attempts to finish with an attack percentage of .258. Schneider had a match-high 20 kills while Maddie Seliga chipped in with 15 kills. Abby Becker had 47 assists and Nicole Yuede had a match-high 23 digs.
S&T is back at home on Saturday taking on Wisconsin-Parkside at 2 p.m.
