Rolla, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners dropped a pair of hard fought one-run ballgames to William Jewell on Sunday at the S&T Softball Field. The Cardinals (16-18, 8-10 GLVC) took the opener 1-0 and the second game 6-5 in nine innings.
Savannah Fedorchak (Oakville, Mo./Oakville) had four hits in the doubleheader while
Monica Weiss (St. Louis, Mo./Marquette ) had three and
Kyra Slemp (Roeland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) finished with two.
Game 1 – William Jewell 1 Lady Miners 0The opener was scoreless through four innings though S&T (11-26, 3-15 GLVC) needed to rely on its defense to get out of a couple of jams. The biggest jam came in the second inning as WJC had runners at first and second with one out but Megan Barnes flew out to Weiss in center and Weiss fired a strike to
Olivia Culbertson (Nevada, Mo./Nevada) at third to complete an inning ending double play.
The Cardinals broke through against
Kati Viets (Sweet Springs, Mo./Sweet Springs) in the top of the fifth. Madi Giles walked to lead-off the inning, went to second on a throwing error and to third on a groundout by Maddie Greenstreet. A walk to Brooke Bernard put runners on the corner with one out. After a foul out to third Nona Pauline singled to left scoring Giles.
The Lady Miners had a chance to tie the game in the fifth as Culbertson reached on a dropped pop up, went to second on a sacrifice but was left stranded there after a popout and a lineout ended the frame.
S&T had another chance in the sixth as Fedorchak singled with two outs but the inning fizzled as she was retired at second on a force play to end the inning.
The Lady Miners were outhit in the opener 6-2 with Fedorchak registering both hits. For the second straight day Viets was the tough luck loser allowing the one run on six hits but she issued five walks against two strikeouts in the complete game effort.

Andi Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara ) led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a walk to Fedorchak. Slemp followed with a single down the right field line scoring Davis. An error by the right fielder allowed Fedorchak and Slemp to advance to second and third.
Hannah Franceschini (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) followed with a bloop single into left center to score Fedorchak. The Lady Miners had a chance to add on but left the bases loaded with a pair of groundouts.
The Cardinals got a run back in the fifth. With two outs and a runner on first Pauline lined a single into left which was misplayed allowing Shelby McGraw to score all the way from first.
Courtney Jackson (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South) got out of the jam getting a pop out to short to end the inning. WJC tied the game in the sixth with another two out rally. Greenstreet singled up the middle plating Ellie Ottensmeyer with the tying run.
Ashley Hill (Centralia, Mo./Centralia) came into pitch for Jackson and got Bernard to fly out to center to end the inning.
Neither side scored in the seventh sending the game to extra innings. Hill pitched a scoreless eighth and S&T had a chance to win the game in the home half of the frame. Slemp doubled to right center with two outs and Franceschini was walked but
Morgan Imhoff (Jamestown, Mo./Jamestown) grounded out to third to end the inning.
The Cardinals took the lead scoring four times in the ninth highlighted by a three-run homer to left center off the bat of Pauline.
The Lady Miners didn't go quietly in the bottom of the inning. With one out
Victoria Culbertson (Nevada, Mo./Nevada) lined a single off the pitcher into center field and Weiss followed with a single deep in the hole at shortstop. Davis reached on a fielding error scoring V. Culbertson and put runners on the corner. Davis stole second to get into scoring position. After a flyout to shallow left, Fedorchak dropped a single to left center scoring Weiss and Davis to make it 6-5. Slemp represented the go ahead run but lined out to center field to end the game.
S&T was outhit in the nightcap 13-10 with Weiss, Fedorchak and Slemp recording multi-hit games. Hill took the loss allowing four runs on four hits with a walk in 3.1 innings. Jackson went the first 5.2 innings allowing two runs, one earned, on nine hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
The Lady Miners are back at home on Wednesday afternoon hosting Lincoln University in non-conference doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m. at the S&T Softball Field.
