Rolla, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners snapped an eight-game losing streak with a fifth inning rally to upend Lewis 5-4 in the opener of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the S&T Softball Field. The Flyers (19-29, 7-21 GLVC) scored three times in the seventh to break a tie and take the nightcap 6-3.
Game 1 – Lady Miners 5 Lewis 4
The Lady Miners (14-35, 4-24 GLVC) broke on top in the opener just three batters into the contest.
Monica Weiss (St. Louis, Mo./Marquette ) led off with a walk and went to second on a sacrifice from
Andi Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara ).
Hannah Franceschini (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) followed with a single to left center scoring Weiss.
Lewis answered back with four runs in the second on only one hit thanks to a pair of walks, a couple of fielder's choices and an error. Carolyn Nojiri had the lone hit of the inning with a single through the right side of the infield scoring Emily Espinosa from third.
After that rough second inning
Kati Viets (Sweet Springs, Mo./Sweet Springs) settled down the rest of the way allowing only two baserunners over the final five innings.
S&T's rally in the fifth started with three straight singles with the third one coming from Franceschini to score Weiss to cut the deficit to 4-2. Davis and Franceschini advanced a base each on the throw to the plate to get into scoring position.
With one out
Cailey Baker (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) was hit by a pitch loading the bases for
Lauren King (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt North). King reached on a fielding error by the second baseman and the ball then got past the rightfielder for another error allowing the tying runs to score.
Carley Hamann (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way North) then singled over the head of the first baseman to plate the go-ahead run.
The Flyers had a chance to tie the game in the sixth as Espinosa reached on a one out double down the left field line but Viets got out of the jam thanks to back-to-back groundouts. Viets then retired the heart of the Lewis lineup in order in the seventh to finish off the victory.
The Lady Miners outhit the Flyers 7-2 in the contest with Weiss and Franceschini registering two hits each. Davis, Hamann and
Olivia Culbertson (Nevada, Mo./Nevada) had a hit each. Viets went the distance allowing four runs, three earned, on two hits, five walks and a strikeout.
Game 2 – Lewis 6 Lady Miners 3
In the nightcap S&T jumped in front in the second inning on a bases loaded walk to
Rachel Aiardo (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) with two outs in the frame. The Lady Miners added to their lead in the third inning as Davis led off the inning with a bunt single and went to second on a sacrifice from Baker. Franceschini walked and then Hamann drove in Davis with a double to left center. S&T couldn't add on though as a groundout and a strikeout ended the inning.
Lewis rallied in the fourth scoring three runs on three hits and a costly error to take its first lead of the second game. Neither side scored again until the Lady Miners tied the game in the sixth. King led off the inning with a single to right and was run for by
Victoria Culbertson (Nevada, Mo./Nevada). V. Culbertson advanced to second on a wild pitch with no outs. After back-to-back outs,
Savannah Fedorchak (Oakville, Mo./Oakville) reached on a throwing error by the third baseman scoring V. Culbertson with the tying run.
The Flyers scored three times in the seventh loading the bases with one out and then Carly Jaworski drove in all three runs with a double to right center.
S&T was outhit in the second game 8-4 with
Carley Hamann (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way North) registering a pair of hits. Davis and King had a hit each.
Courtney Jackson (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South) suffered the loss allowing six runs, four earned, on eight hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
The Lady Miners conclude their 2016 season on Sunday afternoon hosting Wisconsin-Parkside in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
