Lady Miners sweep Wisconsin-Parkside in season finale

Rolla, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miner softball squad concluded its regular season on Sunday sweeping Wisconsin-Parkside 4-3 in 10 innings and 11-1 in 5 innings at the S&T Softball Field. The Lady Miners (16-35, 6-24 GLVC) rallied from a pair of deficits winning the opener on a walk-off single and then in the nightcap used a nine run second inning to overcome an early deficit.

Game 1 – Lady Miners 4 Wisconsin-Parkside 3 10 innings
The Rangers (8-41, 5-25 GLVC) opened the scoring in the top of the third on back-to-back singles from Kellie Fenza and Carly Dundee to take a 2-0 lead. S&T evened the game in the home half of the fourth loading the bases on three consecutive singles to start the frame. Courtney Jackson (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South), running for Kyra Slemp (Roeland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission East), scored on a single by Cailey Baker (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) to cut the lead in half. After a strikeout, Lauren King (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt North) drove in the tying run with a sacrifice fly to right.

The Lady Miners missed golden opportunities in each of the next three innings getting the go-ahead run to third in two of those frames but couldn't score.

Kati Viets (Sweet Springs, Mo./Sweet Springs) got out of a jam in the Parkside eighth thanks to back-to-back great catches on the run by Lori Badalamenti (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland ) in right center to end the inning.

The Rangers broke the tie in the 10th on a three straight singles to start the inning but Viets was able to limit the damage to the one run. In the bottom of the inning, Carley Hamann (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way North) led off and was hit by a pitch and then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Baker. Savannah Fedorchak (Oakville, Mo./Oakville) walked on four pitches and then King followed with a single to left to load the bases with one out.

Badalamenti followed with a hot shot to short which allowed Hamann to score the tying run. On the play the shortstop tried to throw Fedorchak out at third but her throw was dropped by the third baseman keeping the bases loaded. Monica Weiss (St. Louis, Mo./Marquette ) then blooped a single into shallow center over the drawn-in infield on a 2-2 pitch scoring Gretchen Egly (Joliet, Ill./Plainfield Central), running for Fedorchak, with the winning run.

S&T outhit Parkside 16-7 in the opener with Weiss leading the way with four while Hamann had three. Andi Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara ) and Slemp had two hits each. Viets went the distance allowing the three runs on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts to earn the win.

Game 2 – Lady Miners 11 Wisconsin-Parkside 1 5 innings
The Rangers broke on top early in game two thanks to a pair of a walks and a double steal to grab a 1-0 lead in the second inning. The Lady Miners responded in the home half of the second sending 12 batters to the plate scoring nine runs on four hits capitilizing on five walks by Parkside pitchers.

Morgan Imhoff (Jamestown, Mo./Jamestown) walked on four pitches with the bases loaded to tie the game and Badalamenti followed with a five pitch walk to give S&T the lead. A wild pitch allowed Lauren King (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt North) to score the third run. After another walk, Davis lined a double into left center scoring Imhoff and Badalamenti. A groundout to first brought in Weiss with the sixth run and then Hannah Franceschini (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) singled up the middle to score Davis to make it 7-1.

Fedorchak got behind in the account 0-2 but worked it to a full count with three straight balls. She then proceeded to foul off five straight pitches before hitting a two-run home run to right center on the 11th pitch of the at-bat to cap the inning.

The Lady Miners added a pair of insurance runs in the fourth. Weiss led off the inning with a walk and went to second on a sacrifice from Davis. Hamann followed with a triple to center to score Weiss and then Franceschini singled to right center to score Hamann.

S&T only had six hits in the second game but took advantage of seven walks by Ranger pitchers. Franceschini led the way with two hits. Courtney Jackson (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South) got the win in the nightcap allowing one run on three hits and had three strikeouts to earn the complete game win.
