S&T rallies late to upend Lindenwood

ROLLA, Mo. – After being held in check for the first seven innings, Missouri S&T broke through in the eighth and ninth innings to rally for a 5-4 non-conference win over Lindenwood Wednesday afternoon at the S&T Ballpark.

Trailing 4-1 heading into the bottom of the eighth, the Miners scored twice in that frame to draw closer and scored two more in the ninth, winning the game on Eli Miller (Shelbyville, Ill./Shelbyville)'s RBI single with one out.

S&T never led in the game until Miller's hit, falling behind in the opening inning and again in the third after it had tied the contest in the second.  The Lions grabbed the early advantage on a sacrifice fly by Drew Quinones, then the Miners knotted the score an inning later when Tyler Johnson (Union, Mo./Union) opened the inning with a hit and later scored on a double by Lucas Swindle (Weldon Spring, Mo./Lutheran-St. Charles).

Lindenwood loaded the bases at the start of the third and took the lead as Quinones hit into a double play to score Nick Paulda.  Ryan Bearden (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood), the first of five relievers used by the Miners in the mid-week contest, got S&T out of the inning without any additional damage.

The Miner bullpen kept S&T in the game through the middle innings, as Bearden threw a scoreless fourth, followed by a scoreless fifth by Bryan Nolan (Ballwin, Mo./St. Louis University HS) and two scoreless frames from Brannon Callaway (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell).  However, the Miners were held without a hit during that stretch as the Lions maintained the 2-1 advantage.

Lion pitchers Jevon Boyd and Lucas Tibbs set down 12 straight hitters in one stretch until Cameron Burk (Nacogdoches, Texas/Cushing)'s single with one out in the seventh halted that run.

Lindenwood (17-23) added to its lead in the eighth after loading the bases at the start of the inning, scoring once on a wild pitch and a second run on a sacrifice fly by Rayce Singbush.  However, S&T was able to take advantage of an error at the start of its half of the eighth to draw closer.

After a high throw to first allowed Justus Nelson (Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) to reach, Tibbs retired the next two hitters before Johnson singled to extend the inning.  Nick Ulrich (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney) followed by slamming a double down the line in left to score both runners and get S&T back to within a run.

In the ninth, Swindle drew a four-pitch walk with one out, then Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman) reached on a bunt single up the first base line.  S&T then put on a double steal, but the throw by Paulda to third went into left field, allowing Swindle to score the tying run.

Nelson was hit by the next pitch, then Miller – who threw a runner out at the plate to end the top of the ninth and keep S&T within a run – hit the first pitch he saw into left center to bring home Bodenstab with the game-winner.

Despite having just three hits through the first seven innings, the Miners (25-12) ended up with a 7-6 advantage in the hit department with Johnson picking up two of them.  Krenning was credited with the win on the mound as the S&T pitching staff recorded 10 strikeouts on the day.

The Miners return to Great Lakes Valley Conference play Saturday when they face William Jewell in a noon doubleheader in Liberty, Mo.
