Miners split with Cardinals on opening day of weekend set

LIBERTY, Mo. – Missouri S&T rallied for a win in game one of its Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader Saturday at William Jewell and nearly did likewise in game two, but the Cardinals ended up taking the nightcap 6-5 in eight innings after S&T's 6-3 win in the first contest.

The Miners used a five-run outburst in the sixth inning of the opener, with the big hit in the frame coming from Trevor Karbowski (Standish, Mich./Sterling Central) in his return to the Miner lineup after missing nearly a month with an injury.

William Jewell took the initial lead in the game in the first on Dane Erbst's run-scoring double, then after S&T tied it in the second when Lance Portwood (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Santa Fe) reached on an error and scored on Tyler Johnson (Union, Mo./Union)'s hit, the Cardinals regained the lead in the bottom of the inning on Coleman Waheed's RBI double.

The Cardinals added to the lead with a run in the fourth before the Miners started a rally on WJC starter Austin Kretchmar after he retired the first two hitters in the sixth inning.

Following a hit by Eli Miller (Shelbyville, Ill./Shelbyville) and a walk to Portwood, Johnson singled to drive in Miller; a subsequent error on the play allowed Portwood to cross the plate.  Then after a walk to Nick Ulrich (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney), Karbowski singled into center to give S&T the lead.

Before the inning ended, Adam Richter (Breese, Ill./Mater Dei) delivered a two-run double to the opposite field to extend the Miner lead to the eventual final score.

Dan Borek (Greenville, Wis./Hortonville) pitched through the seventh, then turned the game over to the bullpen to close it out.  Luke Marcheschi (Bloomington, Ill./Central Catholic), who pitched the eighth and Ethan Krenning (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) each got a double play immediately after allowing the leadoff batter to reach to finish off the contest.

The Miners outhit the Cardinals 7-6 in the first game with Johnson, Karbowski and Richter all getting two apiece.  Borek allowed six hits and struck out a career-high 10 – matching the most by a Miner in a game this season – to improve to 7-3 on the year.

In the nightcap, S&T took the lead in the second when Ulrich walked to open the inning, went to third on a sacrifice bunt and a Cameron Burk (Nacogdoches, Texas/Cushing) hit and scored on a balk.  However, the Cardinals tied the score in the bottom half with an unearned run that scored on a two-out error.

S&T regained the advantage in the fifth when Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman) led off with a triple and came across the plate on Justus Nelson (Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong)'s single.  Later in the inning, Nelson came in to score on a wild pitch to give the Miners a 3-1 lead.

The lead, however, was short-lived as the Cardinals tallied four unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the advantage.  After an error with two outs kept the inning alive, Jewell loaded the bases and Dylan Christie belted a grand slam to put the Cardinals in front.

The Miners went down in order in the sixth, but in the seventh, Richter led off the inning with a hit.  With two outs, Miller was hit by a pitch and Portwood followed with a double down the line in left to score the tying runs.

S&T ended up stranding Portwood at second and Ulrich at second in the eighth before the Cardinals won the game in the bottom of the eighth on Mike Leeper's RBI single.

The Miners (26-13, 11-7 GLVC) had an 8-6 advantage in hits; Bodenstab had two of the eight Miner hits.  Dalton Erger (Imperial, Mo./Seckman) took the loss on the mound in relief of Aaron Bedsworth (New Bloomfield, Mo./New Bloomfield), who gave up just three hits in six innings.

S&T and Jewell (23-17, 8-10) will close out their weekend series with a noon doubleheader on Sunday.
