S&T’s bats held in check by Hawks

Rolla, Mo. – Missouri S&T's offense was held down by Rockhurst as it dropped both ends of its doubleheader 1-0 and 5-3 on Saturday afternoon at the S&T Softball Field. The Lady Miners (11-24, 3-13 GLVC) managed just seven hits in the doubleheader and were led by Monica Weiss (St. Louis, Mo./Marquette ) and Kyra Slemp (Roeland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) with two each.

Game 1 – Rockhurst 1 Lady Miners 0
S&T got out of jam right out of the gate in the opener as Rockhurst (12-22, 5-11 GLVC) had runners at second and third with one out in the opening frame. Danielle Cross tried to squeeze in Gabbie Boerema from third but her bunt didn't get far enough away from the plate and Cailey Baker (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) pounced on it and tagged out Boerema for the second out. Lauren Cairo then popped out to short to end the threat.

The Lady Miners had a chance to score in the second inning putting runners at first and second with two out but a groundout to short ended the inning. They had another chance in the fifth as Kati Viets (Sweet Springs, Mo./Sweet Springs) reached on an error and moved to second on a sacrifice. Rachel Aiardo (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) came into run for Viets and advanced to third on a single to left by Weiss. The rally came up empty as Andi Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara ) popped out to left to end the inning.

The Hawks broke the scoreless tie in the sixth on a solo home run by Hannah Pyle with two outs in the frame. S&T went quietly over the final two innings being retired in order in the sixth and seventh innings.

The Lady Miners were outhit in the opener 6-3 and led by Weiss, Davis and Savannah Fedorchak (Oakville, Mo./Oakville) with a hit each. Viets was the tough luck loser allowing the one run on six hits in the complete game effort. She struck out five and walked only one.

Game 2 – Rockhurst 5 Lady Miners 3
In the backend of the doubleheader the Hawks jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first. Madison Wagner led off the game with an infield single and went to second on a sacrifice. With one out, Pyle lined a single off of Slemp's glove to put runners on the corner. A wild pitch by Ashley Hill (Centralia, Mo./Centralia) allowed Wagner to score from third and Pyle was thrown out at second after getting caught trying to advance to third on the play.

Rockhurst added to its lead with two more in the third. Alex Hill led off the inning with a single off of Davis's glove at second, stole second and scored on Wagner's triple to right center. Wagner then scored on Boerema's squeeze play to make it 3-0.

S&T got a run back in the home half of the third thanks to a pair of Hawk errors. Lori Badalamenti (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland ) and Aiardo reached on back-to-back errors from Boerema to start the inning. Weiss followed with a single to left to load the bases with no one out. Davis drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly to center scoring Badalamenti. Baker grounded out to first moving the tying runs into scoring position but Fedorchak grounded out to the pitcher to end the inning.

Rockhurst answered right back in the fourth. With runners on first and second and one out Wagner hit a fly ball to right center which was caught by Badalamenti. Badalamenti tried to throw out Tepen out at third but when she went to throw she suffered a lower leg injury and Tepen came into score.

The Lady Miners cut the deficit to a run in the bottom half of the fourth as Slemp led off the inning with a single to center, advanced to second on a sacrifice and came into score on Olivia Culbertson (Nevada, Mo./Nevada)'s double to right center. Victoria Culbertson (Nevada, Mo./Nevada) followed with a walk and Aiardo advanced both runners with a sacrifice. Weiss reached on a fielding error by Tepen to bring in O. Culbertson and put runners on the corner for Davis. Weiss got into scoring position on a stolen base then Davis lined one to center which was caught by Alex Hill to end the inning.

The Hawks added an insurance run in the sixth. With one out Tepen and Alex Hill reached on back-to-back singles then advanced to second and third on a passed ball. Tepen scored when Baker tried to throw behind her at third but Weiss didn't see the throw and it got away allowing Tepen to score and Hill went to third on the error. Ashley Hill (Centralia, Mo./Centralia) was able to avoid further damage as Alex Hill was retired on a fielder's choice at the plate and Wagner was called out for leaving first early to end the inning.

S&T was retired in order in each of the final two frames to end the contest.

The Lady Miners were outhit 10-4 in the nightcap with Slemp picking up half of the hits. Weiss and O. Culbertson had one each. Ashley Hill (Centralia, Mo./Centralia) went the distance in contest allowing five runs, three earned, on 10 hits with a strikeout and a walk.

S&T continues its homestand on Sunday when it takes on William Jewell in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
