Lebanon, Ill. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miner softball squad was swept in its doubleheader at McKendree on Sunday dropping the opener 8-4 and then fell in the second game 9-0 in five innings.
Monica Weiss (St. Louis, Mo./Marquette ) and
Andi Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara ) combined for seven of the team's 14 hits in the doubleheader.
Game 1
McKendree (23-23, 15-11 GLVC) jumped all over
Kati Viets (Sweet Springs, Mo./Sweet Springs) with four runs in the home half of the first on two hits and scored three of those runs on wild pitches. The Bearcats added to their lead with a run in the second on an RBI single Liz Klussman to make it 5-0.
S&T (13-34, 3-23 GLVC) got a run back in the third. With one out Weiss singled and came around to score on
Kyra Slemp (Roeland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission East)'s double. Slemp advanced to third on the throw to the plate but was left stranded their after a popup and a strikeout.
McKendree tacked on single runs in the third and fifth innings to extend their lead to 7-1 heading into the sixth.
The Lady Miners cut the Bearcat lead to 7-4 in the sixth scoring three runs on four hits as
Kelly Heckemeyer (St. Elizabeth, Mo./St. Elizabeth) and Weiss each had RBI singles.
McKendree added an insurance run in the home half of the sixth to make it 8-4 on a groundout to second out.
S&T was outhit in the opener 12-8 as Weiss and Slemp combined for half of the hits. Davis, Heckemeyer,
Hannah Franceschini (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) and
Lauren King (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt North) had a hit each. Viets took the loss allowing eight runs on 12 hits with five strikeouts in the complete game effort.
Game 2
The Bearcats jumped out to an early lead in the second game with a three-run first inning highlighted by a two-run single by Brooke Gajewski and an RBI double from Brooke Hastings. McKendree tacked on a pair of runs in each of the next three innings to make it 9-0.
The Lady Miners were outhit by McKendree 11-6 in game two with Weiss and Davis registering two each. Franceschini and
Cailey Baker (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) contributed a hit each.
Courtney Jackson (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South) got the start in game two allowing nine runs, eight earned, on 11 hits, issued four free passes with a strikeout in 3.2 innings of work.
S&T closes out its 2016 season next weekend hosting Lewis and Wisconsin-Parkside at the S&T Softball Field. The Lady Miners will take on Lewis on Saturday at 12 p.m. and Wisconsin-Parkside on Sunday at 12 p.m.
