Miners split twinbill, but take three of four in weekend set with Truman

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T claimed the weekend series from Truman State by capturing a 3-1 win in the opening game of Sunday's Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader, but the Bulldogs prevented the sweep by scoring a run in the ninth inning of game two to win 4-3 at the S&T Ballpark.

S&T scored single runs in each of the first three innings of game one to back the pitching of Keith Coulson (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central), who threw a complete game, six-hitter to improve to 6-2 on the year.

The Miners got on the scoreboard in the opening inning when Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman) led off with a hit, was advanced to second on Justus Nelson (Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong)'s sacrifice bunt and scored on an opposite field single off the bat of Eli Miller (Shelbyville, Ill./Shelbyville).

In the second, S&T scored in a similar manner as Collin Zurweller (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt East) singled with one out and after moving ahead to second on a ground out, came home on Cameron Burk (Nacogdoches, Texas/Cushing)'s single into center.  S&T's third inning run came when Lance Portwood (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Santa Fe) doubled home Nelson, who led the inning off with a hit.

Coulson kept the Bulldogs off the scoreboard through the first five innings, pitching around hits in three of those frames.   Truman touched him for a run in the sixth after he retired the first two hitters of the inning, as an error following a two-out single by Dave Gambino led to an RBI single by Brendan Trimble.

Following the Trimble hit, Coulson got Adam Gregorich to ground out to end the inning, then got Mason King on a lineout to second following a two-out infield single by T.J. Wood in the seventh to close out the opener.

Nelson and Miller had two hits apiece for the Miners in the first contest, as the Miners outhit Truman 8-6.

The Bulldogs took the initial lead in the nightcap with three straight two-out hits off Trent Green (Perryville, Mo./Perryville) in the third, the last an RBI double by Jason Priest to put Truman ahead.  S&T answered back in the bottom of the inning when Nelson singled off the glove of a diving Priest at third, allowing Adam Richter (Breese, Ill./Mater Dei) to come around from second to score.

The Miners took the lead in the sixth when Tyler Johnson (Union, Mo./Union) singled home Nelson, but couldn't add to the lead when the Bulldogs snuffed out a squeeze bunt immediately after that as Miller was cut down at the plate.  Truman proceeded to take the lead in the seventh with a pair of unearned runs, the first scoring on a bases loaded walk and other when the Miners turned a double play.

S&T answered right back in the bottom of that inning as Lucas Swindle (Weldon Spring, Mo./Lutheran-St. Charles) led off with a hit and scored following a sacrifice bunt and a double down the line in left by Bodenstab.  Nelson followed with an opposite field hit, but Truman right fielder Mason King threw Bodenstab out at the plate to keep the game tied.

The Miners would later load the bases in the seventh, but Peter Young took over on the mound for Truman and got Johnson to fly out to center to end the threat.

After both teams went down in order in the eighth, the Bulldogs got a leadoff hit by Gregorich in the ninth and he would score later when Gambino drew a walk with the bases loaded.  S&T got its leadoff man on in the ninth, but Young got a pair of pop-ups and a fly ball to center to end the game.

The Miners outhit the Bulldogs (15-22, 7-9 GLVC) 12-8 in the game, with Nelson getting three of the 12 hits.  Luke Marcheschi (Bloomington, Ill./Central Catholic) took the loss in relief for S&T (24-12, 10-6 GLVC).

The Miners return to action Wednesday when they host Lindenwood in a single game at 2 p.m. at the S&T Ballpark.
