Springfield, Mo. – Missouri S&T hit a pair of home runs in game two lifting them to a 5-1 victory in the nightcap and salvaged a split at Drury on Tuesday afternoon. The Panthers took the opener 3-0 scoring all three of their runs in the bottom of the third with two out.
Game 2 – Lady Miners 5 Drury 1The Lady Miners (11-22, 3-11 GLVC) broke on top in the backend of the doubleheader on a lead-off home run to right field off the bat of
Kyra Slemp (Roeland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) in the top of the second. Drury (10-22, 4-10 GLVC) answered with a run in the bottom half of the second thanks to a pair of errors by S&T. Grace Hargadon led off the inning reaching on an error, advanced to second on a sacrifice and went to third on a single by Miki Andrus. Andrus was gunned down at second for the second out of the inning but the Panthers were able to score on another error to even the game.
The Lady Miners retook the lead in the third as
Andi Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara ) led off the inning with a single up the middle and went to second on a sacrifice by
Cailey Baker (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield).
Savannah Fedorchak (Oakville, Mo./Oakville) then doubled to left center off the center fielder's glove to put runners at second and third. Slemp followed lifting a fly ball to medium depth in right field which was dropped allowing Davis to score. After a strikeout,
Hannah Franceschini (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) hammered a pitch to straight away center for a three-run home run to put S&T up 5-1.
The Lady Miners got out of a couple of jams in the fifth and sixth innings as Slemp turned a 6-4 double play in the fifth with runners at first and second and one out. She fielded a ground ball, tagged the runner from second going to third and then threw to
Andi Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara ) at second for the final out of the inning.
S&T turned another double play in the sixth inning. Kari Hillenburg led off the inning with single up the middle and stole second. Karlie Peck then tried to move Hillenburg over to third but grounded into a double play as
Monica Weiss (St. Louis, Mo./Marquette ) threw out Peck at first then Hillenburg was thrown out on the backend at third.
Ashley Hill (Centralia, Mo./Centralia) got out of the inning snaring a line drive back to her.
The Lady Miners outhit the Panthers 8-3 in the nightcap with Davis and Franceschini recording two each. Franceschini drove in three runs while Slemp drove in the other two. Hill went the distance allowing one unearned run on three hits with a walk and three strikeouts to improve to 3-1 on the season.
Game 1 – Drury 3 Lady Miners 0S&T had a golden chance to get on the board in the opener loading the bases with one out in the third on back-to-back hit-by-pitches and an infield single but a strikeout and a groundout to third ended the inning.
Drury took advantage in the home half of the third. Andrus led off the inning with a double down the right field line. Andrus was erased on a fielder's choice though as she was thrown out at third on a fielder's choice. With one out Hillenburg walked to put runners on first and second. Peck followed with a sacrifice bunt to move the runners. A hit-by-pitch loaded the bases and then Hargadon followed with a double to right under the glove of Franceschini to put Drury up 2-0. Shelby Weissenbach followed with a single to right for the final tally of the frame.
The Lady Miners had a chance to tie the game with two outs in the fifth but a groundout to short ended the threat.
S&T tallied only two hits in the opener with Davis recording both of them.
Kati Viets (Sweet Springs, Mo./Sweet Springs) went the distance allowing three runs on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks to fall to 5-11.
The Lady Miners begin a 10-game homestand on Saturday hosting Rockhurst in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
